Edmonton
Eskimos 34 vs. Montreal Alouettes 22
| REGINA, Saskatchewan
(Ticker) -- Ricky Ray passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as
the Edmonton Eskimos captured their first Grey Cup in a decade with a 34-22
victory over the defending champion Montreal Alouettes.
Edmonton (14-5) extended its own record with an 11th CFL championship, avenging a 25-16 loss to Montreal in last year's Grey Cup. "It's as sweet as it can get," Eskimos coach Tom Higgins said. Ray threw touchdown passes of 41 and 15 yards to Jason Tucker in a second quarter that saw the teams combine for 38 points. The Eskimos took a 24-21 halftime lead, then held the high-powered Alouettes (13-6) to a single in the second half. Ray extended Edmonton's advantage to 31-22 with a one-yard keeper just 98 seconds into the fourth quarter and Sean Fleming added a 17-yard field goal with 29 seconds to play. Ray completed 22-of-31 passes for 305 yards. Montreal got a pair of scoring passes from CFL Most Outstanding Player Anthony Calvillo and another from running back Deonce Whitaker. But the Alouettes could not overcome four turnovers and failed in a bid to become the first team to defend the Grey Cup since the Toronto Argonauts in 1996-97. |
