Skin . . .

          Oh see . . . the healing,

The flash and pivot of creatures living

          Under the skin of Grace!

from Nancy Willard, 'Skin of Grace,'

in Skin of Grace: Poems by Nancy Willard (University of Missouri Press).

The skin is a natural barrier, a natural layer of protection. Microbes, however, live in all parts of the body, and it is important to have the right balance of microbes in the body, not too much of any one microbe! (See Microbe World's The Wonders of Microbes.) A healthy immune system helps to keep that balance.

Poet Nancy Willard compares the Earth's soil to a cover of skin. For more about the world of soil, see Charlotte's Web, a site that explores the soil beneath us.
