Something different evolves when Becky Kelly
starts designing those unique small wonders. She works with the
Little Friends of Kelly™ dolls and other fashion dolls!
Becky Kelly is a 35 year old mother of three who works part-time
outside the home. Becky joined CustomDolls at Onelist when it was
very new. The group has attributed many tips and techniques
and numerous new friends.
Customizing since 1998,
"I started because I liked the fact that I could
make the dolls that I wasn't finding on the market...it
also helped save money too." Becky laughs out loud. Her talented background began at
childhood with oil painting and later photography, and
needlearts including tatting, quilting, hand appliques,
and silk ribbon embroidery, just to name a few. She likes
to work with fabrics of brocade and dark jewel toned.
Some non-doll achievements are several upcoming patterns published in two tatting books and an article published in Issue #76 of Quilting Today.

"I find ideas all over, but since I do mostly
fantasy designs, I love to look at all the covers of the
latest science fiction books!"
Becky has two favorite parts
of customizing, face painting and working with clays for
fantasy designs. Her least favorite is rerooting the
hair. "It drives me nuts," she exclaims.

What great moments has
Becky had as a designer? It was when her fellow doll
artists started asking her to make baby seahorses for
them!!!
Becky has just began to submit
her designs to publishers. She will be a future featured
artist in the Designer Dolls© magazine.
Future ideas include trying
her hand at the molded hair technique. "I am a great fan
of Dorothy Fannin's work! I also want to do some
beaded evening gowns. As far as improvement goes, I
consider each doll an improvement on the previous ones I
have made, but I will never stop learning and
improving"

Becky occasionally sells on Ebay© and
on her website. She has good advice for other customizers who
want to sell their dolls. "Just keep selling with the idea
that you have to work to get a name for yourself. "
Renee Coughlan is an inspiration for
Becky. She is amazed with Renee's ability to use any object to
create something new!

Other customizing groups
that Becky is involved with include the CustomFantasy list and Jim Faraone's FashionDollMakeovers list.
Do you think Becky has a
favorite doll? "I love Skipper™ and especially the
Little Friends of Kelly™ because they seem so childlike
and cute!"
Becky hosts a webring that
opens the world of customizing for many fellow
designers by putting webpage links that are as close as a click of
the mouse.

Becky has great ideas for the future
of customizing fashion dolls. She would love to see more artists
recognized for their work and that the genre continues to grow in
popularity. She reiterates, "Many people do not look on what
we do as art, but as a 'home-made' or
'bazaar' type item."We asked Becky the ultimate
question. If you had the skill and ability to make a doll based
on anything in the world, what would you use as your inspiration?
What type of doll design would you do?
"I would make a doll that was not
quite so thin as those out there, more representative of a
woman's form. As for inspiration ...mmmm..... the sky is
the limit!"
