ALLEY PROTEST (1932)
This images shows a residential courtyard in Berlin during a rent strike, November 1932. The graffiti says, "First food then rent." This picture dates, of course, from the depths of the Great Depression which had devastated the economies of industrial nations. Many people were suffering, but the Germans were especially hard hit since their nation was the most highly industrialized in Europe. The German people had also been forced to pay war reparations for the destruction of World War I throughout the 1920's. This situation made life for many people. This situation also made them sucumb more easily to the claims and promises of demogogues.
Notice the flags hanging from the windows. Can you tell from the flags what political and ideological factions were competing for the support of general citizens?
