I John 2:1&2

I John 2:1  The first part of the verse John is one of the four mission statements in the book of I
John.  John’s purpose in writing is that we might not sin.  In the first chapter he discusses walking
in the light as He is in the light.  I John 1:7  Purity of life and the reconciliation found only
through salvation are necessary conditions for fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ.  When we
are walking in the light, following purity of life through the inner workings of the Holy Spirit, we
have communication and fellowship with Jesus Christ, who is called our advocate.  An attorney
who represents a client generally likes to communicate with his client.  The client and attorney
should be able to talk freely between themselves.  Sin is what impedes our speaking with our
advocate, the Lord Jesus Christ.  Hebrews 12:11-14, I John 1:9 Confession and repentance of sin
is needed to get us back in the path of light.  Jesus is our advocate on our defense not so that we
can sin, but to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousnes, so that we can get
back to walking in the light quickly.  The purpose is to keep us from sin, not provide a license to
sin.  This is not a license to sin, but a remedy for sin.

First lets look at who is our accuser.  Revelations 12:9,10  Satan is our accuser.  The one who
tempts us to sin is, also, the one who accuses us before God.  He stands ready to tell God what
we have done.  He is a snake.  Not only does Satan tell what we have done, he is the father of lies,
so he may not be truthful in his prosecution of us.

God is just and He is our judge.  Psalm 58:11, 75:7, Hebrews 12:23  Psalms 96:13  He judges
with righteousness and truth.  Unlike some judges God is one hundred percent just at all times.
He judges both righteous and unrighteous  Romans 6:23  The wages of sin is death, eternal death
in hell (Rich man and Lazarus Parable from previous lesson)  God, also, judges the saved.  When
we fall out of fellowship with God through sin, we now are in a place to suffer the chastening of
the Lord.  Hebrews 12:5-7  God is just.  As a father who loves his children corrects them as part
of being a just father.  God corrects us as part of being our just and righteous heavenly father.

Jesus Christ is our advocate, intercessor, and mediator.  I Timothy 2: 5,6, Hebrews 13:24  The
new covenant or the covenant of grace is made possible through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus.
He was crucified, buried and rose again so that He might purchase us out of the slave market of
sin.  Hebrews 9:12, 24  Through the shedding of His own blood, He is able to be our advocate.
Jesus is the one who argues our case for us.  When we repent of our sins and confess them, His
blood and righteousness is imputed in place of our own.  Hebrews 13:20  Jesus blood is the blood
of the everlasting covenant.  Salvation hinges on God and not on man.  When we sin we do not
lose our salvation.  We do lose the joy of our salvation, but not our salvation.  Jesus knows all
about what we are going through.  Hebrews 2:17,18  He not only stepped off the throne of
heaven and died on the cross for us, in order to reconcile us to God.  Hebrews 9:14, 15  He, also,
suffered temptation and persecution.  He knows all about our troubles and struggles.  He can
succour or furnish us with relief and help us through the trials of life.  Hebrews 4:14-16  Jesus
was tempted in all points like as we are, yet without sin.  From this He knows where we are
coming from and is able to advocate that we should be given mercy and grace.  Nothing can
separate us from Christ’s love  Hebrews 8:34-39
