"Metz H. Rasmussen is celebrating his eighty-ninth birthday on April 28,1960.BIOGRAPHY: He was born in Langeland, Denmark. His mother died when was two years old. His father went to the United States and left him in the care of his Grandparents Hansen. In 1882 his Grandmother and Grandfather Rasmussen decided to come to the United States. Before they left for the United States, his Grandmother Hansen, who was in failing health, made Grandmother Rasmussen promise to send for him if she died. His Grandmother Hensen died about a year later. He continued living with his grandfather until his uncle, Hans Christensen, of Eagle Grove, sent passage money for him.
On the fourth of May, 1884, he set out for America. At Sposberg,Denmark, he got on a boat and went to Kiel, Germany. He took a train to Hamburg, Germany. At Hamburg he got on a small ship and went to London, England. Here he got on an oceanliner and went to NY. It took seven days to cross the ocean. The ocean liner was powered by steam and sails. On the ship were many people from Denmark, so he wasn't lonesome.
At NY he got on a train and went to Chicago. All but one of the people from Denmark left him and went to St. Paul, Minnesota. His friend and he got on another train and went to Webster City. His friend had been in the United States before and could speak and write English as well as Danish. Before they parted, he gave Metz a post card that said, "Please show me to the Post Office," and another that said, "Please show me to Paul Paine. " His friend stayed in Webster City and he made the last leg by himself.
When he reached Eagle Grove he slept in the house opposite the East Side Lutheran Church . It covered 40 acres and was build on a swamp. Its name at first was Junction because two railroads met there. Later the name was changed to Eagle Grove because of an eagle in a grove of trees. The town burned in 1894.
He arrived in Eagle Grove on May 25, 1884. He started working out at the age of 17 years . He got married on March 10, 1898. He had four children. His wife died on June 19, 1940 . He now [in 1960] has twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren."BIOGRAPHY: Denmark birth record show first name as MADS, not Metz as he was known to the US family:
