"John Swanson (born Aug. 21, 1850, Vankfria, Sweden) came to Osage, Ia., where he married Anna Gilbertson (born of Norwegian parents in Madison, Wis., Nov. 12, 1857). They traveled by covered wagon to Butzville, N.D. where John and friend Alfred Johnson built ten miles of Northern Pacific Railroad bed with horses and scrapers in 1881 and 1882. In 1883 John and Alfred each took a pre-emption quarter and a tree-claim quarter of land in Pleasant Valley Township northeast of Britton. Alfred Johnson married Anna's sister, Belle Gilbertson. Sister Carrie Gilbertson married George Pierso n and lived in the Claremont area.
Son, Otto was born to John and Anna Dec. 9, 1881, at Lisbon, N.D. Daughter, Josephine was born Feb. 9, 1884, in Pleasant Valley Township. When Anna became ill with tuberculosis the family moved to Britton where Anna died Mar. 8, 1886 . Her grave was the first in the Britton Cemetery. John cared for four-year-old Otto but two-year-old Josephine lived with Aunt Carrie (Mrs. George Pierson) until John remarried. John operated a stage service between Britton and Burch, hauling mail, passengers, freight.Caroline Aarnes (John's second wife) was born May 13, 1856, at Decorah, Ia. In Britton, she and her sister Louisa had a dressmaking shop and her brothers Henry and Lowvy operated a livery barn. Caroline and John had five children. Their first, a son Loy, was born Dec. 24, 1887, while they lived in Britton. In Pleasant Valley Township Silas was born Oct. 14, 1889, Marcia, Mar. 14, 1892, and Leonard, June 1, 1894. John and Caroline acquired a homestead in Dumarce Township and their youngest child, son Harry, was born there Dec. 14, 1897. The family was active in the Zion Lutheran Church several miles northeast of their farm and John was a member of the original church board.John died in 1913 (age 63). Loy died in Canada where he had a garage business. Leonard died while serving in the First World War. Harry, who married Gertrude Olson and was farming the original homestead, died in 1928. John's second wi fe, Caroline, died in 1934 (age 78). John and Caroline and their sons Loy, Leonard and Harry are buried at Zion Ceme tery.Silas (who married Ruth Hammar) farmed in Dumarce Townshi p much of his lifetime. He died in 1970 and is buried in Britton Cemetery. He and Ruth have two daughters: Mrs. Walter (Marjorie) Sckerl, Plentywood, Mont. and Mae Kocabinski , Britton.Marcie married Louis Palmer and they lived in the Chicago a rea. Marcia is buried near Lake Geneva, Wis. Their son Joh n Palmer lives at Lake Geneva and daughter Portia lives nea r. Their son Paul Palmer lives in California.Otto and Josephine (born of John's first wife) are still living in August 1978, and both have been most helpful in providing information for this story. Josephine (now age 94) lives in Indianola, Ia., near her daughter, Mrs. Vincent (Marian) Pemble. Her son, Manley Hoppe, lives at Moline , Ill. Josephine recalls her years of teaching and store clerking in Marshall County before she married Julius Hoppe and moved to Groton, Aberdeen and Iowa. Otto (now age 96) lives in Tekakwitha Home in Sisseton. His memories include the nine seasons of threshing from midsummer until snowfall when he "run the steamengine" for threshing rigs belongi ngto his father John Swanson and his uncle Henry Aarnes. Otto married Eva Brolander at Sunnyside and they farmed their homestead in Dumarce Township. In 1946 they sold that far m to Leonard Olson and moved to Lidgerwood. Their children are: Lee and Verne Swanson, Lidgerwood, Lester Swanson, Chehalis, Wash., Leonard Swanson, Winlock, Wash., and Mrs. Elmer (Clara) Schlagel, Aberdeen." - Marshall County Sou th Dakota History published 1979
"Otto Severn Swanson was born to John and Anna Swanson at Lisbon, North Dakota December 9, 1881, and came with them to Marshall County in 1883. The family lived in Britton and Pleasant Valley Township before moving to Dumarce Townshi in 1895. Eva Mathilda Brolander was born to Peter and Mathilda Brolander at Lidgerwood, North Dakota November 17, 1886. In 1900 the family came to Dumarce Township and started a general store and creamery at Sunnyside. As a young man, Otto acquired a homestead near Sunnyside, where he farmed and, for nine successive harvest seasons "tended steam engine" for threshing rigs. Otto and Eva were married December 17, 1907, at Sunnyside. Except for two years farming for Eva's uncle, Nels Brolander, near Lidgerwood and two years renting the Torkildson farm near Fort Sisseton, Otto and Eva lived on the original homestead until selling that farm to Leonard and Helen Olson in 1946. While in Dumarce Township, Otto and Eva served many terms on the township board and school board. After leaving the farm they lived at Lidgerwood. Eva died July 24, 1972, and is buried at Zion Cemetery, Dumarce Township, beside their infant son, who died in 1913. . ." - Marshall County South Dakota History published 1979
