From: The Decker Genealogy Compilation of Benton Weaver Decker Rear Admiral U. S. Navy (retired) Jan Broerse, born about 1630, was resident of Esopus in 1658. He had come from the West Indies in the Blue Cock in 1644 and settled in Albany. In 1660 he stated that he was from Husum, Schleswig Holstein (Denmark). In 1661 he was on the muster roll of the garrison of Wiltwyck. In 1663 he first mentioned his wife HETLETJE JACOBS of Marbletown. In 1679 he first used the name of DECKER. In 1700 he was a member of troops in Ulster and Columbia Counties. In 1712 he was no longer on the tax list of Ulster County. He settled in Shawangunk (Shongum), 27 miles south of Kingston, where his wife Heyltje died in 1678. He married her sister, Willemtje Jacobs, Dec 14, 1679 (S163). Willemtje was the widpw of Albert Gerritsen when she married 1668 (KM 25) Jan Cornelissen a young man from Gottenburg, Sweden. When he died she M. 1679 (Km 45) Jan Broerse Decker. It is said that son Corelius Janse Decker (Chapter XI) was the son of Willemptje by a previous marriage and as customary was adopted by Jan Broese. Also it is said by others that Cornelius was twin of Gerret 1662. There is no known record to support either of these two conclusions. A daughter Fietje 1671, is recorded in church records, but nothing further is known of her; yet, there are many "Titje" entries. The writing of the letter "F" in one case could be a "T" thus explaining this discrepancy. Two sons and several grandsons moved of Jan Broersen Decker moved across the Hudson into Columbia County. There of the east bank the churches in their baptismal records did not use the wife's maiden name which makes it much more difficult to trace families. In additiopn there are many immigrants of a later date, including several Deckers. In Albany there was a Jan Brower who married Jannetje Jans and had three children Jan 1658, Pieter 1660 and Hendrickus 1662, but of no family connection to Jan Browersen Decker. Jan Browersen Decker's children were: 1] Jacob Jans 1657 (NY) 2] Broer 1660 3] Gaerleff Janse 1662 (KB 16) 4] Grietje 1664 (KB 43) 5] Madelen 1666 (KB 72) 6] Cornelius Janse 1670 (Schemerhorn) (RAJ NOTE: Error in spelling CORNELIS as in "The Decker Genealogy"). 7] Fietje 1671 (KB112) 8] Jurien Jan (Schemerhorn) Note: Only reference for 8th child is in the above Decker Genealogy.
From: Jeurian Tenissen Tappen and His Descendants (Oct 1966) APPENDIX A. The Decker family of Kingston, New York. "Jan Broersen, from Husum" [a town in Denmark, now Germany], was so listed in the muster-roll of militia at the Esopus [Kingston, NY] dated 28 Mar 1660. As John Broersen Decker he was listed with Jacob Decker and Gerrit Janse Decker as taking the oath of allegiance in Ulster County, NY, on 1 Sep 1689. Previously he had served one Jacob Hay or Huys in Santa Cruz and Curacao, West Indies, in 1646, had come to New Netherland and settled at Esopus [Wiltwyck or Kingston] in 1658. His wife, the mother of his children, having died, "Jan Broersse Decker, widower of Heiltje Jacobs, residing in Marbletown, and Willemtie Jacobs, widow of Jan Cornelisse, from Gottenburg [Sweden], residing in Kingston" were married on 24 Dec 1679 (KgM no 45). She had previously been the widow of Albert Gerretsen, who came from Embderland to Kingston, NY, and, by will dated 3 Sep 1665, devised all his estate to his wife Willemtie Jacobs. She had married second, on 11 May 1668, Jan Cornelisse from Gottenburg, Sweden. Jan Broersen Decker and his second wife, Willemtie Jacobs made a joint will, in the Dutch manner, dated 1 Jun 1682, in which each devised the survivor "everything, lands, houses, money, moveables". Jan Broersen Decker died after 1709, in which year he was assesed at 50 pounds, but before 1712, in the Ulster County tax list for which year his name was not found. Probable children: 8, surnamed Decker. (Details in family register).
Married Cornelia Tappen.
Gerrit and Magdalena had 4 children, bapt 1684-1694. Gerrit died bef 1696. His wife, MAGDALENA WILLEMZ SCHUT, dau of Willem Jansen Schutt, Shawangunk,Ulster Co,NY, who d. testate in 1722. After Gerrit's death, Magdalena remarried Richard Winfield (ref Hoes Marr #116, 12 Jan 1696, Rutsert Windveld b Derby, Engl and Magdalena Schut, widow of Gerrit Decker).
Hoes records incomplete in this period (1670). Cornelis and Marya had 4 children baptized 1696-1702. ELSJE TEN BROECK:
Birthplace from Hoes Marr #116. Dau of Wessel Ten Broeck, Sr. of Foxhall, Ulster Co. who died testate 25 Nov 1702; and his first wife Maria Ten Eyck.
From Don Short in Jan 2000. Quoting "Jeurian Teunissen Tappen and His Descendants": Probable children of Jan Broersen Decker included: "Fietje Janse Decker, bap. Kingston, 18 Jun 1671. As her name is found in index of brides, mothers, and sponsors in the Register of the Kingston Church, it appears that she died young, unless she is identical with Titje." RAJ NOTE: I have chosen to make the presumption that in this case, the writing of "F" was a slip of the pen. Quoting from Roswell Randall Hoes, speaking of the Domines of this particular church: "It never seems to have occurred to these university-bred Dutch Domines of the Kingston Church to inquire how various persons presenting themselves for marriage, or their children for baptism, spelled their own names, but these names having been pronounced in their hearing, they recorded them phonetically, according to the prompting of their ears, or arbitrarily, according to the dictates of their fancy....Some of our most familiar family names of today are recorded in these pages in half a dozen or more different ways, and in many instances variations in spelling occur even in the same baptismal or marriage entry." RAJ NOTE: I have tried to record each baptism or marriage exactly as written. Examples of said variations in spelling will be found in the baptismal records to the 11 children of this couple.
Only reference to Jurien Jan Decker is in "The Decker Genealogy" compiled by Benton Weaver Decker Rear Admiral US Navy (retired).

Data re Westphalen name from Pedigree Chart: Johannes (George) Westfall on Family Search Ancestral File v4.19. Obvious errors in Ped Chart.
