Joseph P. HOLT was born on 28 Sep 1793 in Wilton, Hillsborough, NH. He died on 23 Apr 1876 in Vergennes, Jackson, IL. He was buried in Tuthill Cem, Old Vergennes, Jackson, IL.
When Joseph was only 2 or 3 years old, the family moved to Weston, Windsor,Vt. His parents died when he was about 16 and he probably lived a few years with his uncle John Dale Holt. In the fall of 1835 the family emigrated west and Joseph located on Tuthill's Prairie in Jackson co.,Ill. He later purchased a farm in Section 10, Vergennes Twp, now known as the old Holt Homestead. He lived there from 1840 until his death.
Joseph was a farmer, carpenter and builder. He owned and operated the first window sash factory in Jackson Co. The gravestone for Hannah and Joseph which was still standing in 1978 in the Old Vergennes Cemetary has this inscription "Mr. & Mrs. Holt with 10 children moved in a 2 horse wagon from Landgrove,Vt. to this place in the fall of 1835."
