Samuel was very young when he came with his father to America. He settled in the part of Chelmsford which is now Westford. In 1679, Samuel Fletcher took up a piece of land on the west side of Great Tadmuck (twenty-six acres) the bounds of which were renewed in 1709. He subsequently made additions to his original grant until he owned about four hundred acres, extending to Sparks Hill and "Mackrill Cove" including the farm on which his grandson William settled about 1730.

"A Genealogical Register of the First Settlers of New England;" by John Farmer lists Robert: " ROBERT, Concord 1635, a constable in 1637, d. 3 April,1677, (age) 85."

"November 2, 1637, Robert Fletcher was chosen constable of Concord." Shattuck, Lemuel, History of the Town of Concord; Middlesex County, Massachusetts, From Its Earliest Settlement to 1832, (1835) p. 18. "The family name of Fletcher, or Fledger as it was originally spelled, has been long known in New England, as the first immigrant, Robert Fletcher, came over with Sir Richard Saltonsall and Governor Winthrop in 1630. He emigrated from Yorkshire, England, bringing with him three sons, Luke, William, and Samuel, and settled in Concord, Mass., where he subsequently lived until his death on April 5, 1677, at the age of eighty-five years." 2. Francis remained with his father in Concord and became like his two older brothers who settled in the adjoining town, a great landowner. He was reported "in full communion with ye church at Concord" in 1677, and admitted freeman the same year. At that time he owned seventeen lots of land in Concord, amounting to 437 acres. A petition to license a man to sell wine is signed by him, Dec 14, 1661.
