John Sturgeon 1

Passengers to America, Consolidation of Ship Passenger List from New England Register, but Michael Tepper lists John Sturgeon 1740. page 474 and Carl Boyer's "Third Edition of ship passenger list, National and New England", has John Sturgeon to America in 1740 page 36.

John bought land in Cumberland Co in 1767-or applied for it them and sold it in 1783 and Elenor signed the deed with him. He sold more land there in 1784 and Elenor did not sign-indicating she may have died . This is the last record found of him in Pa, and he was in KY by 1784.

Tax lists-Nelson CO 1792-1794, Bourbon Co 1788, Shelby Co 1800, He is on all the Barren Co Tax lists starting in 1802 until Hart Co was formed -from portions of Hardin and Barren Counties in 1819. Early Ky Tax lists 1790 Nelson Co Ky-James-1 male over 21, 25 acres 1793-James Sturgeon- 1 male over 21, 2 horses, 4 cows 1795-May 12. James Sturgeon-1 male over 21, 2 horses and 3 cows. Census-Barren CO KY 1802-1810-,He was a farmer
McCoys Book- Went with his father to KY, (Nelson CO, John W says) where he married Elizabeth and they moved to Hart Co KY where they reared a family of ten children. I have the history of but two, of these. Jeremiah and Obadiah. Rolly is said to have gone to Indiana. Stories of Early Days of Hart Co. KY by Cyrus Edwards, states that In 1791 James Sturgeon, a Revolutionary War soldier, took up his miltary warrent of 200 acres in and across the narrow valley about half mile N.E. of Northtown (now of Hart Co.) he was much past middle age at the time and had a family of 8 or 9 boys and several girls and they were the ancestors of all the families of that name with whom I am acquainted in Hart and Adjoing counties, and he lived to be 102 years of age. The family of James Sturgeon was the only one of John's children included in Mr McCoy's-History of the Sturgeon's of North America . James Sturgeon b Cumberland Co PA in 1758 married Mary Shearman, b1755 in Pa, Bourbon Co KY 8-21-1788 (bond James Graham, Mary Shearman certified she was 21 years of age, wit. Samuel McClure and John Sturgeon.) McCoys book page 183 either has James wife name wtong or he had a first wife and Mary Shearman was the second.

Barren Co Deed: December 23, 1811, Book B, p 431. Valentine Simons and Anny his wife, sell for $20 a parcel of land containing 100 acres in Barren County to James Sturgeon of Barren County. They live in Hardin County. Witnessess: Joseph Lard, William Cann, and Joshua Crump. MARRIAGE BOND!-To the clerk of Barren County Court Kentucky I do hereby autherise you to issue licens for marriage between my son Squire Sturgeon and Nancy More. Given under my hand and seal this 30th day March 1817. After 1845, his sons Squire and Obadiah's land holdings increased-for Squire-395 acres to 645 acres and 3 slaves, Obadiah-625 acres- 1 slave in 1843 to 925 acres with 4 slaves after 1845. Ky land record warrents note that a John Sturgeon had 50 acres of land surveyed on 11-22-1825. This probably was John Sr and he sold this 50 acres to Jame's prior to 1829, the Hart Co Ky tax records never listed John Sr as owning 50 acres of land.
