John Morris

1Ancestral File (R), Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah.

2Wanda Johnson, Fam. Gen. Researcher, email.
" Deed records were found starting in 1822 for land he bought in Rush County, Indiana when government land was put up for sale at Brookville. A later deed was found selling 80 acres of land in Brookville, Rush Co. to their son, Elihu Morris, on 26 April 1828. ...deed showing Elihu selling the same land to Peter VanDyke, on April 25, 1832. Another deed shows John Morris selling 61 acres to Jefferson Helm on September 12, 1833. It appears that the entire family started selling out in early 1830’s with plans to move to Marshall County. Records show they arrived in Marshall County in the mid 1830s. Next record found was on the Indiana Census, Marshall County, Union Township in 1840. On 1840 census John and his wife were between 50 and 60 years of age and they had four children living with them.

John was listed in Union Township as one of the first settlers and was also listed on the first vote taken in Union Township. ... The book “History of Indiana,” Page 34 states that in the spring and summer of 1836, in the vicinity of Maxinkuckee Lake and farther north and east in the direction of Plymouth, the Voreises, Morrises, Thompsons, McDonalds, Dicksons, Brownlees, Houghtons, Blakelys and others arrived and made a permanent settlement and were early petitioners to form Union Township. In the Recorders Office in Marshall County, many deeds were found for John. After his death, his property was probated and divided among heirs. ... Included is a map showing all his land in Marshall County and also a deed for land from the United States of America signed by President Martin Van Buren for 60 acres of land.

John died in 1840 and Phoebe died in 1842. Both are buried in Burr Oak Cemetery. He donated land from his farm to start this cemetery. His daughter, Phoebe and his son, John Milton were the first two buried there. They both died in 1838, Phoebe, August 21, 1838 and John M, August 30, 1838, just nine days apart of the fever that was prevalent there in that year. (Also called Vorheis Cemetery)."
