"Rex Gates SPRINGFIELD - A memorial service will be held July 9 for Rex Reginald Gates of Springfield, who died July 6 of cancer. He was 78. Gates was born June 2, 1927, in Forest City, S.D., to Roy and Josephine Vorhees Gates. He married Beverly Golden on Nov. 19, 1955. He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1951, aboard the USS Bronx and the USS Fulton. He lived in South Dakota, Texas and Oklahoma, then moved to Oregon. He lived in North Bend, Coos Bay, Coquille and Eastside before moving to Springfield in 1965. He worked as a truck driver in pipeline construction and for Weyerhaeuser, then worked in the grocery industry. He worked for the Springfield School District until his retirement in 1991. He was a life member and past commander and chaplain of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3965 in Springfield. He also belonged to Restoration Fellowship in Springfield. Gates enjoyed NASCAR, Seattle Mariners baseball and spending time with his family, friends and dog, Scooter. His family said "he was always first in line to lend a helping hand" to people in need. Survivors include his wife; a son, Dennis Golden of Marysville, Wash.; a daughter, Paulette Gaither, also of Marysville; two brothers, Arnie and Leonard; three sisters, Shirley, Frances and Margie; two grandchildren and two great-grand- children. Saturday's service will be held at 10 a.m. at Restoration Fellowship in Springfield. A luncheon will follow at VFW Post 3965 in Springfield. Inurnment will be in Springfield Memorial Gardens. Springfield Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars or the American Cancer Society."7Obituary.
