Bottom of Form 2 Obituary provided to me by desc., Maggie Draper-Hunt. -Kim Printed 1 Dec 1927, Free Press, Reedsburg, Sauk Co., Wisconsin: MERRITT A. KNAPP, son of Prusia M. Knapp and Comfort H. Knapp, was born May 22, 1849 at Collins, Erie Co., New York and departed this life November 23, 1927, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison, Wis. at the age of 79 years, 6 months, and 1 day. In 1855 the family left their eastern home, coming to Reedsburg, Wisconsin, but after 9 years, took the pioneer trail; turning westward in the wake of the picturesque and historic oxen teams and covered wagons. For five years they endured the hardships of the untamed frontier, returning the next year to Reedsburg where they took up permanent residence, and here he remained until united in marriage to Rhoda C. Douglas Sept. 10, 1871. To this union six children were born all of whom survive him. In 1894 Merritt Knapp joined the M.E. Church of North Freedom. The first shadow on this kindly life fell when his beloved wife was called to her eternal reward in June, 1915. Sorrowed but submissive to the Divine Will, he took up the thread of every day life and turned his gentle efforts to distribute sunshine to unhappy lives to ease his loneliness. His sudden demise after a long life of noble thoughts and deeds, truly leaves an aching void which never can be filled. Those left to mourn their loss include two sisters, Mrs. James Randall of Reedsburg, Mrs. Frank Morley of Baraboo, two brothers, Edwin L. and Frank C., both of Idaho, 6 children, George C. of Portland, Oregon, Merritt A. of Rosalia, Wash., Arthur R. and Mrs. Hattie Grosinski of North Freedom, Percy C. of Pilot Rock, Ore., and Mrs. Geo. Stein of Baraboo; 24 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, besides scores of relatives and friends."
