ln his younger days he was a hlacksmith, but being a man of ambition, and great force of character he acquired an education unusual for those of his environment. In l751 he was Deacon and in 1755,. Elder of the Machackemech Church, end at the time of his death he was Vredrichter, or Justice of Orange County which office he had held for many years. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the cause of the colonies in the War of the Revolution; a signer of the "Articles of Association" at Minisinck and he served in the Militia forces as captain of Orange County Militia. His patriotic zeal procured for him the enmity of there who sympathized with England and in the latter part of l778 he was assassinated by Tories. a few months prior to the birth of his youngest child, Anthony Van Etten, Jr. His home was a strongly constructed stone building in which his widow and children continued to reside after his death until the invasion of Brandt in July, I779. The place was dismantled but not burned, and his widow, returning, lived there until her death."
