"Columbia, South Carolina Obituaries, 1859-77
Record of Deaths in Columbia South CarolinaStephen Arnold Douglass, died in Chicago, Illinois, June 6, 1861, of Typhoid affection. The least said, of this very prominent citizen by any Southern writer, would seem to be, the most prudent and proper. No southern man should write his epitaph. That duty and high privilege, should be committed to the canaille of Black Republican miscreants, among whom he died, and by whom, his remains were escorted to the grave, with tokens of high regard and honor.
[Page 63] Judge Douglass, it is well known was one of the Candidates for the Presidence of the late United States, with Breckenridge, Bell and Lincoln. He was a Candidate on his own Hook (as the term is), for he was not the nominee, even of the Conservative Democracy. Descending from the dignity of his high position, he travelled through the then Union, delivering a series of stereotyped speeches, in his own behalf, which savored strongly of Free Soilism, at the North, East and West; and of conservative State Rights at the South. The consequence was, he was signally and ignominiously defeated, and hence disease and death, in precisely seven months, from the day of the Presidential election, on the sixth day of November 1860, was his allotment.
[p.23] Of his political doctrines, the writer has nought to say, and of his [page 64] virtues, or his faults, the writer is just as silent; let his abolition friends do the needful on the occasion, as they are celebrated for their mendacity, and total disregard of all that is honorable, or meritorious; but of the ambition of this dead man, when in life, the bard of Avon (Shakespeare) puts in the words of Cardinal Woolsey to Cromwell (his Secretary) some appropriate advice. Methings it suits this subject matter: [long quotation through the end of page 65.]."5North Carolina Marriage Collection, 1741-2004, North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh, North Carolina.
