"Norma Kathryn Hierl Tyson
Norma Kathryn Hierl Tyson, 77, of Baileys Harbor, Wis., was escorted into her heavenly home on Nov. 30, 2004.
She was born on Oct. 19, 1927, in Fond du Lac, the daughter of Harry T. and Marie K. Isaac Hierl.
On July 1, 1950, she married Richard F. Tyson at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Fond du Lac.
She was a member of Prelature of Opus Dei, St. Mary of the Lake Sodality, NAMI Door County, Baileys Harbor Women’s Club, The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and St. Sebastian Parish in Milwaukee.
Norma’s journey on earth was a living example of these words of the founder of Opus Dei, St. Josemaría Escrivá. Norma was a faithful Supernumerary member of the Prelature of Opus Dei for over 40 years, living out her Christian faith in her ordinary life as wife and mother, teacher and friend to all of those who she met along the way.
She attended St. Joseph’s Grade School and St. Mary Springs Academy, studied and Marian College and graduated from Rosary College (Dominican University) in River Forest, Ill., in the Class of 1949. She taught Drama and English at Marian College from 1949 to 1951.
She met Richard F. Tyson on Feb. 11, 1949, and they were married July 1 of the following year. At that moment her role as wife and mother began and was her lifelong joy and work until she was peacefully escorted into her heavenly home.
Surrounded always by family and friends, she was an inspiration to all she met. Norma’s smile and brilliant blue eyes will sparkle on in the memory of those whom she loved and who loved her. The world is certainly a more beautiful place because of Norma’s life and generosity.
Norma is survived by her husband of 54 years, Richard Francis Tyson; her sister, Mary (Chuck Reich); and a brother, Tom Hierl (Sue). She will remain always in the hearts of her children, Daniel, Joseph (Jeanne), Mark, Teresa (Tim Philipp), Mary Pat (Greg Vanderlaan), Kate (Bill Weir), Anne (Jaime Pera), Jane (Greg Menting), Martha, Matthew, Caroline and Susan (Tom Coady); and her grandchildren, Erin, Matthew and Kevin Tyson, Sarah, Christopher, Andrew, Robert, Emily, Stephen, Patrick and Daniel Tyson, Elizabeth Philipp, Luke Vanderlaan, Colleen, John, Nicholas, Mary Elizabeth, Thomas, Brian and Daniel Weir, Daniel and Lauren Pera, Patrick and Joseph Menting, and Madison and Emma Coady.
She was preceded in death by her youngest son, Paul Richard; her sister, Patricia (Hauer); and her parents, Harry T. and Marie K. Hierl.
• Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, Baileys Harbor. The Rev. Mathew Simonar will officiate, and interment will be at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Cemetery.
• Visitation: Visitation will be from 10 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at the church, with the Holy Rosary at 11:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Norma’s memory will be gratefully accepted by the organizations of which Norma was a member, listed above, for the continuation of caring for people and for souls.
