Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at the Christ Episcopal Church in Gettysburg with Orlow Eidam officiating. Burial will be in the Gettysburg Cemetery, directed by Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the funeral home. Martin was born July 31, 1918, at the Cheyenne Agency Hospital to Frank and Margie (Gates) Smith of Forest City, S.D. He attended Gettysburg High School, graduating in 1935. He went to USD at Vermillion for a brief time before opening a billiards hall at Cheyenne Agency. On July 16, 1940, he married Arlys Natchke at Deadwood, S.D. They raised cattle for 20 years on a ranch near the Morreau River. With the building of the Oahe Dam and subsequent flooding, in 1959 the family moved to Gettysburg and a year later, bought a farm seven miles southwest of Gettysburg. In 1975, they moved into Gettysburg where they lived until 2003 when they moved to Brandon, then Sioux Falls nursing homes. Martin enjoyed baseball, reading, playing cards and billiards with his many friends. He received several honors at pool and in 1986, was inducted into the South Dakota Eight Ball Hall of Fame. Martin is survived by his wife Arlys; children, Martin Bruce of Kansas City, Mo., Jon (Karen Beringer) of Sioux Falls, Mary (Buddy) Edmondson of Tampa, Fla., Barry (Diane Hottman) of Pierre, Nancy (Tony) Borders of Sacramento, Calif., Peggy (Carey) Cossaboom of Anchorage, Alaska, and Donna (fiancŽ Kevin Murphy) Spicer of Pierre; one sister, Mary Irene (Robert) Westergard of LaCrescent, Minn.; sister-in-law, Norma (Jones) Smith of Gettysburg; 14 grandchildren, Paul Smith, Mary Ellen Smith, Regan Smith, Craig (Peggy) Smith, Sarah (Dan) Schumacher, Kenny (Kelli) Edmondson, Candace (John) Holt, Brandy (Emily) Smith, Derek Smith, Darin Smith, Brandon and Karen Borders, Jared and Kayla Cossaboom, Jessica Spicer; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Robert Smith. Memorials can be directed to the Gettysburg Cemetery Association.
