"JOHN AMBROSE SHIRLEY FAMILY HISTORY
WILLIAM BRAXTON SHIRLEY BRANCH
Draft by Donald D. Osborn, 1982

William Braxton Shirley was born March 10, 1816 somewhere along Quick Run, in Lewis County, Kentucky. He was the son of John Ambrose Shirley and his wife, Elizabeth Danner.

Most family records have shown William to have been born in Indiana, however those census records that show place of birth have indicated that he was born in Kentucky. John Shirley was on the Lewis County tax records as being at Quick Run till 1817. Thus, it is concluded that William was born prior to the move to Indiana, rather than after. The move was probably <between harvest in 1817 and planting in 1818, note by Donald D. Osborn>.

About 1817 the family moved to the new State of Indiana, settling in that part which, in 1819, became Columbia Township of Fayette County. It was here that William spent his boyhood.

In 1827, the family moved on west and settled about 13 miles east of Indianapolis and just east of the county line between Marion and Hancock Counties. This area was along the new National Road which had just been completed as far as the new Capitol of Indiana. This historic road is now US Highway 40. William grew to manhood in this area.

Sometime between 1834 and 1837 William went with or followed his brother John Alexander to Marshall County, Indiana. These two seem to have been the first of the family to go there. Later, they were followed by their father Ambrose Shirley and brothers, Samuel, Reuben, and Philemon.

William B. Shirley married Eleanor Blakey on October 12, 1837 in Marshall County. Eleanor is thought to be a sister of Lydia Blakely who had previously married William's brother, John Alexander Shirley.

William was listed as a head of household in the 1840 Census of Marshall County at which time they were shown with one daughter. Sometime in the early 1840's they moved to Monroe County, Indiana where William's sister Tabitha and her husband, Jacob Payne had lived since their marriage in 1828. Eleanor died in Monroe County, on August 15, 1847 at the birth of her sixth child, who also died. Only two of the children of William and Eleanor reached maturity.

William B. married Rose Ann Gray on December 14, 1847 in Monroe County, Indiana. Rose Ann was born March 23, 1829 at Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana, the daughter of David Gray and his wife, Sallie Bass. Rose Ann's siters, Polly and Martha Ann, later would marry John and James Payne, sons of Tabitha Shirley Payne.

In the 1850 Census of Monroe County, Indiana, William Shirley was listed in Benton Township which lays east of Bloomington, Indiana. The household included: William 33, Rosanna 19, Margaret 10, John 8, Sarah 6, and Martha 2. William was shown as a carpenter and born in Kentucky.

About 1858, the Shirley family moved to McLean County, Illinois and were there until 1866, when they moved back into Indiana, location near North Judson, Wayne Township, Starke County, Indiana. Starke County was adjacent to, and on the west, of Marshall County.

Their last child was born in Starke County, and their daughter Martha married William Bell in Starke County.

In 1878, William Bell and his wife, Martha Shirley started a migration of the William Shirley family to Kansas. William and Roseann Shirley followed shortly although the date of their move to Kansas is unknown.

Willam and Roseann settled on a farm homestead about five miles north of the town of Norcatur, Kansas. Norcatur was located on the county line between Norton and Decatur Counties. It is thought that they settled on the Decatur side of the county line.

In northwestern Kansas, William farmed, served as a minister of the United Bretheran Church, and also functioned as a practical doctor to the family out on the prairie. It is said of him, "He was an able speaker. He was the best doctor in the country, and the only kind of a doctor in those days. People sent for him, for many miles around, in case of a serious illness."

Roseann Gray Shirley was apparently quite temperance minded and is said to have broken up a saloon in Norcatur in Carrie Nation fashion.

William Braxton Shirley died April 10, 1887. His death was the result of burns received while fighting to save his home from a prairie fire which had been started by a disastrous fire in the town of Norcatur, Kansas. At about 3:30 PM on April 8, 1887, during a wind storm, a fire broke out in a building in the business district of Norcatur. The winds whipped the flames out of control and within thirty minutes ten business houses and a residence were aflame. Sparks were crried into the rural areas and started prairie and other fires.

Although there was much loss of property, crops, and pasture, the only life lost lost in this disaster, was that of William B. Shirley.

The following is from the Norcatur Register, Norcatur, Kansas, April 15, 1887: "The wind continued to blow all night, and a great many stayed up until morning, trying to extinguish the fire, which lasted for several days, in piles of corn, coal, etc. The fire that burned the town did not stop its work of devastation until it did a great deal of damage between Norcatur and the Sappa. The most sorrowful accident of the whole affair was the death of Rev. W. B. Shirley, who in trying to save his home by fighting the fire, was so badly burned that he died Saturday evening about sundown. He wa buried on his farm Monday afternoon, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Bloyd, of Edmond. Mr. Shirley was one of the best and kindest hearted men we ever met, a true Christian, without an enemy. His untimely death has cast a gloom over the whole neighborhood."

The following is from The Oberlin Eye, Oberlin, Kansas, April 14, 1887: "The saddest of all I have yet to relate. Rev. Shirley, a man 71 years of age, residing about 4 miles southeast of Lyle, was out backfiring when his clothes caught fire and before help could reach him, he was so badly burned that he died from the effects in about 24 hours after. Mr. Shirley was beloved by all and his untimely death causes general grief. Our heart goes out in sympathy to his aged companion."

Roseann Gray Shirley died Augsut 18, 1917 at Norcatur, Kansas. William and Roseann are buried at the Shirley cemetery on the homestead site north of Norcatur."
