"Willoughby S. Knowles passed away Sepember 17 at this home in this city. He had reached the age of 77 years, 1 month, 8 days.
Mr. Knowles was born in the town of Excelsior on August 8, 1855, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Knowes. With his parents he moved to Reedsburg at the age of neine years, and he was a resident of Reedsburg and vicinity the remainder of his life.
On November 26, 1885, he was united in marriage to Rosella Reed. To this union were born three children, Glen, who resides at Mount Horeb; Mrs Gladys Rosenthal of this city; and Miss Hester Knowles who teaches at Beloit.
Mr. Knowles has been failing in health for several years. He was confined to his bed the first of September. Just as the sun rose Saturday morning he passed away surrounded by the member of his family.
He is survived by his wife, three children, a siser Mrs. Mae Hainstock of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, six grandchildren, other relatives and many friends."9Cemetery Inscriptions of Sauk County, Wisconsin, Vol 9; page 8.

"Stephen Knowles was born in New York, September 8, 1832, When >>>unreadable>>> he moved with his parents to the state of Indiana. In the year 1848 he came to Baraboo. June 4, 1854, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Emily Jane Barnes and to them were born three children, W. S. Knowles of Reedsburg, May Hainstock of Hillsboro and Cora Ellen who died when only four years of age. In April 1864, they moved on a farm south of Reedburg which was his home until about ten years ago when he retired from farm life. His wife died at Hillsboro seven years ago. Since that time he has made his home with this son W. S. Knowles except the last two years which he spent with his daughter Mrs. May Hainstock.
Mr. Knowles was a man of exemplary habits, honorable and upright in all business dealings. In early years he was a member of the protestent Methodist church but when in Reedsburg he was a regular attendant at the Baptist church.
Mr. Knowles was one of a family of nine children of which only three survive him. Amos of Chelan, Washl; Jasper of Park Rapids, Minn.,and Almedia of Dallas, Ore. There were also half brothers and sisters, one step-daughter Mrs. Henretta Pits of Hartford, S. D. twelve grandchildren and several neices and nephews besides many friends to morn his loss.
Mr. Knowles died at Hillsboro Wednesday, June 7, 1911, and was buried June 9, at North Freedom beside his wife and daughter, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. J. T. Sharman of Reedsburg."
