      2. Deacon William Douglas (Robert) was born in 1610 in Scotland. He died on 26 Jul 1682 in New London, New London, CT.

 

DEACON WILLIAM DOUGLAS, the immigrant ancestor, was b. 9th August, 1610, doubtless in Scotland; m. probably about 1636, Ann MATTLE, dau. of Thomas MATTLE of Ringstead, England. In 1640, with his wife Ann and two children, Ann and Robert, William DOUGLAS went to New England. Tradition says that they landed at Cape Ann. They settled first in Gloucester, but removed within [p.1 88] the year to Boston, where he is first mentioned in the Boston records on 31st June, 1640, when he was made a Freeman.  He moved shortly to Ipswich where he was entitled to a share of the public land, 28th February, 1641. There he remained for about four years, returning to Boston in 1645. He was a cooper by trade and on 1st May, 1646, there is record of his purchasing from Walter MERRY and Thomas ANCHOR, a dwelling house, shop and land. Later he went to New London, CT, and obtained considerable property through purchase and grants from the town. One of his farms was inherited by his son William and has remained in the hands of descendants for over two centuries. In 1662-1663 he was appointed one of the Appraisers of Property for the town of New London.  The land for a new church was purchased from him and the graveyard still remains on that place. He and Mr. WILLERBY were appointed to deliver provisions to Commissary TRACY at Norwich during King Philip's War. His education for the times was liberal.  He held many important offices in the town at different times. He was Deputy to the General Court in 1672 and once or twice later.  In May, 1670, his wife, then sixty years old made a journey to Boston to establish her claim as heir to her father's property.  She d. in New London in 1685 and William DOUGLAS himself d. there on 26th July, 1682    -per Colonial families of the United States of America

 

William married Ann Mattle in 1636 in Scotland. Ann was born in 1610 in Ringstead, Northhamptonshire, Eng. She died in 1685 in New London, New London, CT.

              4 M       ii.  Robert Douglas was born in 1639 in Scotland. He died on 15 Jan 1715/1716 in New London, New London, CT.

 

ROBERT2 DOUGLAS (William1), born in Scotland in 1639. He was a year old when his parents came to MA, and twenty-one when he removed with them to New London, Conn.,  in 1660. Lands were set off to him in New London, April 16, 1663. He also inherited from his father, in 1682, a house and lands in New street, which he sold in 1700, to his son William. That same year he gave William two house-lots in New street, on opposite sides of the town street; and also a dwelling-house (on the corner of Douglas street) on condition of his providing in the house a home for Robert's unmarried daughters, whenever they should wish to occupy it.  In 1704, he gave William a deed of the farm of one hundred acres, granted by the town to his father, and which he had inherited from him in 1682, together with fifteen acres since added.

WILLIAM DOUGLAS, of New London, CT, b. in Boston, 1st April, 1645; d. there 9th March, 1725. William DOUGLAS, Jr. received lands at Volunton, 29th March, 1706, which he afterwards sold to his son William3d; m. (firstly) at New London, CT, 18th December, 1667, Abiah HOUGH, dau. of William and Sarah (CAULKINS) HOUGH of New London, and gd. dau. of Edward HOUGH of Westchester, Cheshire, England. She was b. 15th September, 1648,d. 21st February, 1715 . William DOUGLAS m. (secondly) July, 1715, the widow Mary BUSHNELL, who survived him. His children were all born in New London     -per Colonial families of the United States of America

WILLIAM DOUGLAS, of Plainfield, CT; b. in New London, CT, 19th February,1673; d. 10th August, 1719, at Plainfield; here moved in 1699 to Quinnebaug, afterwards Plainfield, CT, where he had land on the east side of the river; he also owned the lands of his father at Voluntown; m. Deacon WILLIAM DOUGLAS III was born in New London, CT., on February 19, 1672.   He was admitted to the church, July 24, 1698. The next year he removed with his wife and two children to "the new plantation on the Quinnebaug, which was afterwards named Plainfield". Here lands were set off to him "on the east side of the river". He also owned lands in Voluntown, which he purchased of his father, August 18, 1715, for "thirteen pounds of good and current money."  He was one of the little company that covenanted together and formed a church in Plainfield, in 1705. Deacon William was chosen as the new church's first deacon. The inscription on his gravestone in Plainfield, reads: "In memory of Mr. William Douglas, Who was ye first Deacon of ye church of Christ in Plainfield who Departed this life August ye 10th A.D. 1719 in ye 46th year of his Age.”  In his will he provided for his wife Sarah and eleven children, all of the latter under twenty-one years old. His wife was Sarah Proctor, but no date of his marriage can be found in the New London records. His eldest two children were in New London, all of the others in Plainfield. His widow, Sarah, was living in 1729, but no record of her death has been found.
