Point Blank
I don't like to sound elitist, but listening
to Point Blank has convinced me that there is an 'underclass' of
heavy metal. This 'underclass' seems designed exclusively for dickheads
who want to seem metal and be angry about something. Nailbomb makes
me angry because they suck so badly.
Firstly, the drawcard for Nailbomb was the involvement
of Max Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulfly), but there is absolutely nothing in
common between Point Blank and, say, Beneath the Remains.
You say that Cavalera is broadening his horizons? Not when the riffs on
Point Blank are possibly lazier than Limp Bizkit and the lyrics
abysmally childish. There is nothing that a hardcore, metal, metalcore,
death metal or nu-metal fan could appreciate from this release. It's just
bad. So Max, broadening your horizons is no excuse.
Secondly, looking at the cover excited me at
the prospect of something political and confronting. Not only is this not
particularly confronting musically, but lyrically the songs contain absolutely
no meaning whatsoever. Even on a mundane emotional level, there is nothing
here but 'angry metalhead' cliches that become tiresome after the first
track.
Thirdly, I know album booklets don't strictly
speaking come within the domain of album reviews, but the Point Blank
is so ridiculously pretentious that I feel any prospective buyer should
have warning. Paying out Sinead O'Connor, deliberately using incorrect
grammar to be funny, writing "1000000% Hate" and filling the lyrics section
with pictures that imply political rebellion without any politics in the
music is just not cool! It's lucky that the music is so shit, because
if it hadn't been then the booklet would have spoilt it anyway.
Forthly, with involvement from Sepultura members
Igor and Andreas, as well as Fear Factory's Dino Cazares on drums for track
3, I espected to hear some guitar solos or some cool drumming. Instead,
the drumming here sounds basically like a drum machine the whole way through
(which is a bad idea), and the guitar solos are just out of tune exercises
in how to emulate distortion from one's amplifier.
I could just keep on going, but even reducing
myself to writing a review of Point Blank is making me angry. This
is not music, this is crap. Next time you wipe your ass, watch out - you
might accidentally discover another Nailbomb album.
