White Paper on the Osaka Economy & Labor

In recent years in Japan, the enormous popularization of the internet and cellular phones, and the rapid growth of IT (Information Technology) has been a topic of conversation. This IT usage does have a very large impact on the competition among industries.

This year's edition of the "White Paper on the Osaka Economy and Labor (a combination of the White Paper on the Osaka Economy and White Paper on Labor that were previously published separately) has the sub-theme "IT and Osaka Industries: How They Use It, Changes It Brings to Work", which focuses on businesses in Osaka, particularly on how small and medium-sized enterprises use IT to run their business.

In addition to this, it addresses the kinds of IT related businesses that are developing in Osaka, how the development of the IT industries may affect the employment situation and the structure of a new work model that will be needed in response.

This white paper also addresses the economic situation and labor economics in Osaka for the year 2001, which had not recovered from the downward fall starting in November 2000. The difficult economic situation in Osaka was also highlighted with the fact that the unemployment rate was 7.2%, being the worst in Japan after Okinawa.
