Toga Party

The Toga was the most formal article of clothing worn by men in Ancient Rome, equivalent to the tuxedo today. However the modern Toga Party tends to lean towards more revealing and sexy outfits. The party provides the perfect excuse to eat and drink copious amounts, and generally indulge yourself in true Roman style.

THE PARTY

Invitation:
Give the invitation a Roman or Greek theme.  Provide the usual details such as Day, Time, Location, Dress (Toga or alternatives), What you are supplying and what guests need to bring, RSVP time and contact information. Add a short description  of why and how you are celebrating.

You will need to decide if togas are mandatory for the party and specify this on the invitation. It is also a good idea to provide details on how to make a toga (see below) or provide some spares for those who forget.

Decorations:
Build or hire some fake columns and roman statues. Lots of foliage, artificial fruits (especially grapes), dress the cat or dog as a lion, plastic swords, wine goblets and posters of gladiators. The togas and accessories in addition to the food (detailed below) will add to the toga party look. To hire any decorations for the toga party refer to our Party Supplies Business Directory.

Dress:
Hmmm, let me think, a toga perhaps. Here are our tips for the perfect toga.

  • Sheets are not the best choice. Used sheets are unsightly and white fabric is much cheaper anyway. You could spend a little more and try gold satin for that special look.
  • You will need approximately 4 metres of fabric per toga.
  • Be creative and pick a fabric that suits your personality (white is standard but gold satin looks great).
  • Wrap around your waist at least once and then throw the remainder over either shoulder covering your chest. Take the fabric hanging off your shoulder and bring it around your back to your waist and tie it off or pin it to the waist.
  • You can go bare shouldered or some type of t-shirt underneath for modesty.
  • Underwear is optional.
  • Try to wear sandals with the toga.

Toga Accessories:
Toga accessories can really make the toga. Additions such as a belt (rope or chains are best), pin on some grapes, and/or an emperor like sash all look great with a toga. Try other accessories such as fake swords, shields, a crown of olive leaves, gold chains and jewellery.

Food and Drinks:
Extravagant food platters are ideal for a Toga Party. Make some great fruit platters (include plenty of grapes and olives as they are synonymous with greedy Romans in togas). Make some more standard finger food platters such as cheese platters and dips served with biscuits, carrots and celery sticks. For the main fare bring out the meat platters (cold & hot) including chicken and turkey pieces and roasts, complimented with some side salads.

Wine is the perfect accompaniment for the toga party platters (does not have to good wine) and even better if served in some stylish wine goblets. Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic punches served in a punch bowl are also perfect for the occasion. Otherwise stick with the standard beer and bourbon.

Entertainment and Games:
Hire some videos for inspiration and entertainment. Try titles such as Cleopatra, Gladiators, Hercules and Hercules Returns (Great Aussie takeoff of Hercules).

Have prizes for coolest, sexiest and worst togas. Also prizes for the worst legs, hairiest back and the winning gladiator.

Have a gladiator contest. Here is a list of possible gladiator events:

  • Arm wrestle

  • Blindfold the gladiator and time how long it takes them to find and mutilate a paper gladiator with their plastic sword.

  • Watermelon eating contest (messy stuff)

  • Push Up contest (Good male testosterone lifting activity)

For some reason toga parties and sexy games tend to mix (probably because most Roman toga parties turned into orgies). For a list of great Adults Only games, click here.

Find some servants (normally the losers of a simple game) to pamper the remaining guests. The slaves must feed their 'masters' with grapes and any other food they desire, fill their wine glasses on demand, and generally fuss over them. This provides a fine photo opportunity especially if the room is decorated as described earlier. However, don't use and abuse the servants for too long as patience may be tested (some people just don't like being servants). Try involving people who quite happy to fill both roles.
