Hangover Cures

Last night you were on top of the world, impressing everyone with your charm and ability to solve all the worlds problems. Today, your sick, the bells are ringing inside your head, you can't look at food let alone attempt to eat it, and the clock has just hit 12 noon and your still in bed. Of course you are saying to yourself, "I will never drink again", but you know you will.

So here are a few tips to help you enjoy the night and still wake up in the morning feeling capable of tackling the day ahead.

Prevention

The easiest way of curing a hangover is to prevent it in the first place. The rules are easy:

  • Get plenty of sleep.

  • Drink in moderation.

  • Don't mix your drinks.

  • Drink plenty of water.

  • Don't drink on an empty stomach.

Easy isn't it !!!! Well sometimes all of the above just isn't possible, so here some other tips to help prevent that mother of all hangovers.

Tips

1) Dehydration is a major cause of all hangovers, as alcohol acts as a diuretic and makes you urinate more fluid than you take in. Therefore, it is very important to drink plenty of water, particularly during a long, heavy drinking session, otherwise the odds are your head will feel like it is ready to explode the next morning. Tip - Many soft drinks will actually enhance dehydration so drink water between alcoholic drinks.

2) Don't mix drinks. The body has a hard time processing the different impurities present in different alcoholic drinks, which in turn leads to worse hangovers.

3) Some drinks will cause more severe hangovers than others. Vodka is the best for avoiding hangovers, followed by gin, tequila, scotch, brandy, rum, and unfortunately bourbon comes in last. White wine is better than red wine. Sweet drinks are worse than beer. Top shelf drinks will have less impurities than cheaper varieties and are therefore less likely to cause hangovers.

4) Vitamins before you go to bed help neutralise the effect of alcohol. However do not over do them.

5) The next morning keep the water intake up, try some more vitamins, or some nutrient rich and stomach friendly bananas and tomato. A sports drink or Berocca can't hurt either.

6) Believe it or not, an alcoholic drink first thing in the morning does actually help. Some may swear by a beer first up, but by far the best morning after drink is the Bloody Mary (vodka, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tobasco, salt & pepper). Not only does it provide some essential nutrients for the body, but a small intake of alcohol actually reduces some of alcohol withdrawal symptoms you may be suffering.
