We are finally at the concluding stage in the men's edition of the Hundred as we have just one match to go before the top-four sides meet in the knockouts. The only remaining match of the tournament is to be played between Welsh Fire and London Spirits, the two sides that have struggled in the competition up until now.
This match will be a basement battle as the losing team will finish with the wooden spoon. The match is to be played on 18th August 2021 at the Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. While both these sides are no longer in contention to qualify for the next round, they both would still want to win this match. A cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards here.
Given the way Welsh Fire started in the tournament, many would be surprised to seem them languishing near the bottom of the points table. Their slide down the table had a lot to do with the players moving to play for England. Jonny Bairstow was in terrific form when he had to leave Welsh Fire and that happened to be about the time when they began losing plot.
At the moment, Welsh Fire are placed at the seventh position with four points to their name and can no longer move up the ladder, even if they win this upcoming match. Their net run-rate of -0.979 shows how poor they have been in their recent matches. They do not have momentum and that could be a factor weighing against them when they take the field on Wednesday.
On paper, they have a decent side, but the long absence of Jonny Bairstow has taken a toll on their balance. Having said that, they still have many players who can win them the match on their own. Coming off a terrible run in the Vitality T20 Blast, Eoin Morgan was hoping for a better show in the Hundred, but not to be. A win here will push them to the seventh spot, handing the wooden spoon to Welsh Fire.
On paper, London Spirits always had a formidable lineup, but lack of execution cost them the matches more often than not. They have an experienced leader in Eoin Morgan who can be a match-winner on his day. He, along with the other experienced players, will need to come good in this match. If that happens, London Spirits will be a very tough side to deal with.
