We are just about to get into the business end in the CSA T20 Challenge and with half of the league stage done and dusted, a clear line of separation is emerging between the teams placed in the top-half of the ladder and teams struggling to get there. We should get an even clearer picture about the qualification scenarios after the conclusion of matches scheduled to be played over the next couple of days.
Up next in the tournament, the Warriors are set to take on the Lions in a match that couldn't be more important for any of these sides. Both these sides have struggled for momentum in the competition thus far and another loss here will mean curtains for the team losing here. The match between the two sides is to be played at the St George’s Park Cricket Ground in Gqeberha, Port Elizabeth on 19th February 2022.
Even though the Warriors are placed slightly above the Titans on the ladder, it is not because they have done a lot better than the Lions. They have, in fact, done similar to how the Lions have done and have the same number of wins and points. Thanks to their slightly superior net run rate of -0.607, they are placed at the sixth spot.
Just like the Lions, the Warriors too are coming off a loss in their last match. Batting first against the Rocks, the Warriors managed to put up a fighting total of 156 runs on the board with Wihaan Lubbe and Tristan Stubbs doing well. However, their bowlers could not hold their nerve as the Rocks chased the total down in the final over with three wickets in hand.
On paper, the Warriors have a well-experienced side, but they have not been able to convert that experience into on-field performance. Apart from Wihan Lubbe and Tristan Stubbs, they have struggled to perform consistently with the bat. Their bowling too lacks sharpness required to keep a potent batting lineup quiet. They would need a monumental effort from their senior pros in the upcoming match if that happens, they will certainly be in business big time against the Lions.
Matthew Breetzke, Wihan Lubbe, JJT Smuts, Lesiba Ngoepe, DS Rosier, Tristan Stubbs, Sinethemba Qeshile, Dane Paterson, Akhona Mnyaka, Tsepo Ndwandwa, Lizo Makosi.
The Lions have one of the most successful sides in South Africa's domestic circuit and they will be utterly disappointed with the way they have done in the tournament thus far. With just one win from a total of five matches played, the Lions have been dismal. They have a total of four points to their name and their net run rate of -0.722 shows how terrible they have been.
Led by Malusi Siboto, the Lions have a last opportunity to stay alive in the tournament and will be looking to put their best foot forward. They are coming off a poor outing against the Titans as they failed to do anything of substance in any of the two departments of the game. Batting first on a decent surface, they managed just 148 runs on the board, which was a great recovery after they lost wickets in a bunch in the middle-overs. However, the total was nowhere near enough for a potent Titans side as they chased it down with 11 deliveries to spare.
The Lions so far have been very unpredictable with the bat and that has cost them four matches thus far. While they have been decent with the ball, their over-reliance on Reeza Hendricks is well and truly apparent and they will need the youngsters to step-up their game here. If that happens in this upcoming contest, the Warriors will have their work cut out.
Reeza Hendricks, Kagiso Rapulana, Shane Dadswell, Mitchell Van Buuren, Bjorn Fortuin, Dominic Hendricks, SSB Magala, Malusi Siboto, Codi yusuf, Tladi Bokako, Juan Landsberg.
Both these sides are staring at the bottom of the ladder and a loss here will certainly push the losing side further down on the points table. The winner, however, will continue to stay afloat and that is exactly what these two teams will be fighting for. Comparing the two sides on paper, the Warriors look slightly ahead. There isn't much to separate the two sides apart from that and for that reason, betting on a Warriors win should be the way to go here.
