South Africa got off to a spectacular start in their home test series by winning the first test with considerable ease. Their win was setup by a superb show by their bowlers and with Newlands' conditions likely to suit fast bowling again, it's going to be another tough match for batsmen. The two teams are set to lock horns on 3rd January at Cape Town. It was an exciting first test the match swung in both directions before South Africa won it with six wickets in hand. Both the teams are likely to make a couple of changes going into the next match and along with the game, it will be interesting to see how the two teams resolve their selection dilemma.
Unlike the common belief which is to keep the winning combination intact, South Africa are sure to make changes in their playing eleven at Newlands. However, with Vernon Philander back to his usual best, as far as the fitness is concerned, he will walk into the side.
Philander has been phenomenal at this venue, picking 49 wickets at an outstanding average of a little over 16.5. Along with his bowling, his batting skills will be handy considering how significant each run was in the opening game. What's interesting to see is who he will replace in the upcoming game.
Duanne Olivier was selected in place of Vernon Philander in the opening game and the excellent match-defining performance by the young fast bowler has put the Proteas' think tank in a sweet spot of bother. With Keshav Maharaj being their lone spinner and a battery of quicks unworthy to be dropped, Theunis de Bruyn is likely to make way for Philander particularly because of Philander's all-around abilities.
South Africa batting did reasonably well in the first test with Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock being exceptional lower down the order. It was remarkable the way they both batted with the tail which, in fact, one of the reasons for the Protean victory. Hashim Amla's solid unbeaten fifty in the fourth innings would have instilled a lot of confidence in him as well as in the team which is going to be crucial going into the next game.
Quick bowlers have always done well in conducive South African conditions and it wasn't any different in the opening test. Barring Dale Steyn, who was hammered by Babar Azam in the first wickets, all their pace bowlers looked at their absolute best and if they continue to perform in a similar fashion, it's going to be yet another tough test for the Pakistani batsmen.
Aiden Markram, Dean Elgar, Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma, Theunis de Bruyn, VD Philander, DW Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Duanne Olivier.
Just like the home team, Pakistan, too, will be rejoicing the comeback of Mohammad Abbas who will add to their bowling strength by a significant proportion. Although Pakistan's bowlers did extremely well in the opening match, one of the bowlers will have to make way for Abbas and the youngest bowler of the lot, Shaheen Afridi, is expected to be left out.
We are expecting Pakistan to make another big change which is at the top of the order with Haris Sohail likely to come back into the side. In the first test, it was Shan Masood who came into the side as Sohail was injured, but his well-made 65 run knock in the second innings is likely to stay afloat in the side. Instead, one of Fakhar Zaman or Imam Ul Haq will make way for Sohail with Masood moving up to open the innings.
Bowlers did well for Pakistan in the opening test, but the performance of their batsmen and their skipper was subpar, to say the least. Babar Azam played a splendid counter-attacking knock towards the end of their innings, but that along with Shan Masood's 65 in the second innings were the only bright points with the bat for Pakistan.
Going into the next match, the senior players in Pakistan will have to take more responsibility to occupy the crease for a little longer. They have a decent bowling attack which is expected to thrive at Newlands and if their batting is able to complement their bowling, there's no reason for Pakistan to not make a comeback in the second test.
F Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Babar Azam, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mohammad Amir, Yasir Shah, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Abbas.
Although winning the toss and batting first didn't pay off for Pakistan in the opening test, we are likely to see both the captains option to bat first with the surface likely to deteriorate as the game progresses.

The surface at Centurion was extremely conducive to the fast bowling with opening test barely lasting for three days and it isn't going to be any different at Cape Town. However, the kind of uneven bounce and carry we saw in the first test isn't likely to happen at the Newlands until the end of the third day. The weather is forecasted to be a bit cloudy over the next few days which will add to assistance for the bowlers. The team batting first will be particularly happy with their effort if they're able to score anything more than 350 in the first innings of the match.
It was only the second occasion in last test matches at Centurion that the team batting second prevailed. South African bowlers bowled brilliantly in the second innings to reduce Pakistan to a modest total despite the kind of start they got off to. Proteas were helped by Pakistan's inability to handle pressure at key junctures of the game with was attributed to Pakistan's lack of experience of playing in South African conditions. Pakistan had a lot of time between the two games and we are likely to see an improved version of them. However, the Proteas are playing at home and were clearly better than the tourists in the opening encounter. Despite a couple of their batsmen failing in both innings, their batting was more settled as compared to that of Pakistan's. With all the aforementioned factors, South Africa are firm favorites to win the upcoming match and seal the series.
