We are just about at the fag end of the league stage in the Pakistan Super League 2021-22 and things are still looking far from settled. Apart from Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars, all teams are still striving to get a slot in the playoffs. And those who already have, they will be striving hard to occupy one of the two spots on the ladder.
The upcoming matches in the tournament are going to make things a lot brighter as far as the qualification scenarios are concerned. The first match of Friday, 18th February, 2022 is to be played between Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators. The match is to be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and as has been the case recently in the competition, this too is expected to be a cracker of a contest.
Having experienced just one defeat in the competition so far, Multan Sultans have undoubtedly been the best side of the tournament thus far. At one stage, they were looking invincibles and while Lahore Qalandars managed to successfully offer some resistance to their caravan, they bounced back with an excellent win over Karachi Kings to announce themselves back.
The dominance of Multan Sultans in the tournament so far is illustrated also by their position on the points table. With 14 points to their name in eight matches, the Sultans are sitting at the top and will be very hard to displace from the top. A win here, in fact, will seal their top of the table finish in the league stage and that is what they will be eyeing to get from this contest.
After a disappointing performance against the Qalandars, the Sultans needed to bounce back and needed to do that well. Chasing a total of 174 against the Kings, the Sultans were terrific from the word go and sealed the deal with seven wickets in hands and three deliveries to spare. As has been the case in the tournament already, Shan Masood and Mohammad Rizwan were the stand-out performers with the bat from their camp and will hold the key in this upcoming match as well. With the ball, it was a collective effort as all of their bowlers contributed by either picking up wickets or by bowling miserly or both.
On paper, there are only a few sides in this competition that can match Multan Sultans on balance and potency. In Shan Masood and Mohammad Rizwan, they have a terrific opening pair that has done consistently well so far. To add to their strength they have explosive batsmen in Tim David, Rilee Rossouw, and Khushdil Shah who all can be match-winners on their day. All in all, Multan Sultans have the momentum and match-winners at their disposal. If they are able to play to their potential, getting past them will prove to be a very still climb.

Led by one of the most experienced captains of the PSL 2021-22, Sarfraz Ahmed, Quetta Gladiators have really struggled to come into their own. They have shown glimpses of brilliance thus far and they will need all of those in this upcoming match against the Sultans.
As it currently stands, Quetta Gladiators are hanging by a thin thread in the competition and nothing less than a win will work for them. They are placed at the fifth spot with three wins from eight matches, aggregating to 6 points. The fact that they have a pretty poor net run rate of -0.285 does not help their cause either. Even a couple of wins will not ensure qualification for them, but the result of this upcoming match will definitely make things a lot clearer as far as the qualification scenarios are concerned.
It's been three matches since the Gladiators last registered a win in the tournament and a couple of back to back defeats has pushed them from a commanding position to possibly a position of no return. In their last match, they failed in both departments of the game as they not only racked up a low score batting first, they also struggled to put any fight with the ball as Lahore Qalandars chased the 142-run target with eight wickets in hands and 14 deliveries to spare.
Quetta Gladiators have a terrific side on paper, but because their star batsmen have blown hot and cold, the Gladiators - together as a team, have lacked consistency. Their over-reliance on Jason Roy is well and truly apparent and would need the other players to step-up in this upcoming match. If that doesn't happen and the likes of Roy and Vince too aren't able to produce their best, the Gladiators are likely to have a very hard time against the high-flying Sultans.

While the teams generally prefer to chase in the shortest format of the game, it is mostly opposite in the day games. Not only will the surface get a tad slower as the match moves ahead, there will be massive score-board pressure on the team chasing if the team batting first is able to put a reasonably good total on the board. For that reason and the other ones stated above, expect the captain winning the toss to bat first.

It's been a long time since Pakistan Super League has moved to Lahore for the second leg of the tournament and as an impact of that, the surface is getting slower after every passing match. We did see a high-scoring match between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi just the last night, but those are becoming infrequent. Besides, batting in the day games is going to be a tad difficult. Boundaries, on the other hand, will be short and help the batsmen. Considering all that, any total of over 175 should be difficult to chase down in this upcoming match.

Multan Sultans may have confirmed a top-two berth already, they will by no means want to take things lightly given how important momentum can be in this shortest format of the game. For Quetta Gladiators, however, this match is more like a knockout fixture. This is undoubtedly a match that is more important for the Gladiators, but the Sultans too are not going to take this lightly. Keeping the recent form and the on-paper combinations of the two sides respectively, the Sultans do look ahead. One of the primary reasons for Multan Sultans to be doing as well as they have done in the competition thus far has undoubtedly been their opening pair of Shan Masood and Mohammad Rizwan. They both have scored heavily and will be fancying their chances in this upcoming match too. It hasn't been the same for the Gladiators, even though they too have fantastic openers at their disposal. Considering what we have seen thus far, a bet on Multan Sultans to have a higher opening partnership seems to be a pretty lucrative option. Definitely a good one for those looking to play it safe.
These are small grounds and hitting sixes hasn't been as difficult as it generally is in the T20s. With surface expected to be good one for batting and both sides having expansive power-hitters available at their disposal respectively, sixes should come think and fast.
