Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings - the two most successful teams in the history of the Indian Premier League and not many would have thought these two teams to be languishing right at the bottom of the points table in the ongoing edition of the competition. Both these sides have had a remarkably poor tournament thus far and turning it around from here would need nothing less than a miracle. Having said that, sometimes a win is all a side needs to turn the fortunes around and that is exactly what they both will be looking for in their next outing.
Coincidentally, Chennai Super Kings will be taking on Mumbai Indians in what would be the next assignment for both these sides. We have often seen these two sides fight it out at the top of the table but this time it is going to be a battle to get out of the pit. Both these sides have struggled in the tournament so far and they both will be desperate to bag two points here.
The match between MI and CSK is to be played on 21st April 2022 at the D.Y. Patil International Cricket Stadium, Mumbai and it promises to be a cracker of a contest.
Not often have we seen Mumbai Indians being in the sort of situation they are in and often when they have been in dire straits, they have managed to get back amid the thick of things and qualify. At this stage, however, a spot in the next round seems to be a distant possibility. They would need to win all their remaining matches to have a fair chance to qualify and given the form they have been in, not many would want to bet on that possibility at the moment.
As it currently stands on the points table, Mumbai Indians are placed at the bottom-most spot and are still searching for their first win. Not only that, they have a pretty poor net run rate of -1.048, which they would want to improve along with getting some points on the board.
It is not that Mumbai Indians have been completely outplayed by their opponents. It is just that Mumbai Indians have failed to take the final leap of handling the crunch moments. The fact that Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan have not scored well for them hasn't helped their cause either. Dewald Brevis, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Verma have done well for them in the middle-order and that, perhaps, is the only thing that has kept their hopes alive despite a disastrous start.
On the bowling front as well, we have seen them make a number of mistakes, which isn't usually a Mumbai Indians' characteristic. Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, none of their bowlers have looked sharp enough to cause any troubles whatsoever. That has in-turn allowed the opponents batsmen to play him out safely and attack the other batsmen. Largely because of how their bowlers have done, Mumbai Indians find themselves in a poor position and bouncing back from here will need some radical changes.
We expect Tymal Mills sitting out in the next match and that same could happen with Murugan Ashwin as well to make way for Mayank Markande. The batting, on the other hand, has although not done as well as it is capable of, it looks settled. Mumbai Indians would need to play out of their skins in this upcoming match and if they are able to do that, Chennai Super Kings will certainly have their work cut out.
Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Dewald Brevis, Tilak Varma, SA Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Riley Meredith, Hrithik Shokeen, Jaydev Unadkat, Daniel Sams, JJ Bumrah.
Chennai Super Kings had a start remarkably similar to that of Mumbai Indians but much to their respite they managed to sneak in a win to slightly stay above Mumbai Indians in the pecking order. Although they are still far from announcing their candidature for a spot in the next round, another couple of wins will put their campaign back on track and they would know that.
As it currently stands on the points table, Chennai Super Kings are placed at the second spot from the bottom with just one win from six matches. Apart from one match, they have fought in almost all matches, and would need the final push to convert those losses into wins going forward. They have a net run rate of -0.638 and would definitely want to improve that going forward.
In the previous match as well, they were in a position to dictate terms before Chris Jordan bottled it with the ball. Having said that, this has indeed been their story in this season as they have struggled to get quality overs in the back-end of the innings, regardless of whether they are batting first or bowling first.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, RV Uthappa, Dwaine Pretorius, Shivam Dube, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Mitchell Santner, Maheesh Theekshana, Mukesh Choudhary.

Not often do we see the context of the MI-CSK match to be bigger than the rivalry that exists between the two sides and this is one such match. The winner of this one will continue to hang in with a thin thread and things would get pretty difficult for the team losing here, not that they aren't already. Comparing how the two sides have done, there's hardly anything to separate the two. Both sides have struggled with bowling and that could be a spectacle in the upcoming match too. Considering all that and the respective combinations of the two sides on paper, a bet on Chennai Super Kings is the way to go here.
Both sides have struggled with the ball in all the matches they have played and their average respective economy rate is an evidence enough of that. Considering how the two sides have done so far, at least in the bowling department, we expect this match to be a high-scoring encounter. Bet on the match total to exceed 319.5 runs.
It took five innings for Ruturaj Gaikwad to get going but he looked sublime when he did. He was at his fluent best in the last game and relished playing against pace and spin both. We expect him to produce yet another imposing performance against a bowling unit that hasn't done too well. Bet on Ruturaj Gaikwad to score a fifty here in this match.
It is not often that you see Rohit Sharma going through such a bad phase. He hasn't scored big from quite a while now and is due for runs. Most of his dismissals in the tournament so far have been a tad unlucky and we expect him to be a lot more circumspect at the start in this match. Despite the form he has been in, bet on Sharma to score a personal total of at least 24 runs.
