Just as we predicted, Loughborough Lightning ended up on the wrong side of the result in their opening contest of the tournament, against Wester Storm, wherein they were defeated by a massive margin of seven wickets. Lightning, last year's runners-up will have yet another opportunity to rise up the ladder as they take on Southern Vipers in Kia Women's Cricket Super League. The match is set to be played at Haslegrave Ground, Loughborough on Thursday, August 8th. Southern Vipers, on the other hand, are coming into the upcoming match on the back of an astonishing win and will be itching to continue riding on their winning form.
Loughborough Lightning do not have too many star players in their lineup, and unlike they did so win the last edition of the tournament, they failed to utilize the depth of their lineup as they were restricted for a total of just 125. Barring Amy Ellen Jones and Mignon du Preez, who both scored 65 and 25 respectively, none of their batsmen looked settled at the crease.
Although their bowling tried hard to keep Western Storm out of the game, Storm's prowess in batting proved to be too mighty to take down on an easy batting surface. GA Elwiss and S Glenn bowled their heart out and returned with the respective figures of 17 for 1 and 13 for two, but with not so similar assistance from their other bowlers, they couldn't keep Storm for scaling down the target.
All in all, Loughborough Lightning may not have too many international stars available at their disposal, they have a well-balanced side. They have a similar squad like last year's and will not be an easy team to beat if all of their players somehow start contributing.
Hayley Matthews, Amy Ellen Jones, Chamari Atapattu, Georgia Elwiss, Mignon du Preez, Georgia Adams, Jenny Gunn, Kathryn Bryce, Sarah Glenn, Lucy Higham, Kirstie Gordon.
Thanks to their superb net run-rate and a bonus point, Southern Vipers are currently at the top of the table with five points to their name and will be looking to build onto their supreme position at the ladder.
In their first match, they defeated Lancashire Lightning by a margin of 34 runs, which is a lot in the shortest format of the game. After a dismal home series against the Aussies, the likes of Daniele Wyatt and Tammy Beaumont found back to form as they both scored a half-century each to take Vipers to a more than respectable total of 166 runs.
While the total of 166 wasn't too difficult to gun down, Vipers' bowlers bowled extremely well to keep Thunder's batsmen on their toes. Natasha Farrant and Lauren Bell were the picks of their bowling while Danielle Wyatt, after contributing with the bat, provided their upfront bowlers with excellent help as they restricted the Thunder for just 132 runs.
Danielle Wyatt, Suzie Bates, Tammy Beaumont, Stafanie Taylor, Thea Brookes, Maia Bouchier, Paige Scholfield, Amanda Wellington, Tash Farrant, Carla Rudd, Lauren Bell.

While Loughborough Lightning emerged as the second-best team of the tournament last year, their start this year has exactly been opposite to that. Southern Vipers, on the other hand, were brilliant in their first match and with four world-class players in their lineup, they have a terrific squad at their disposal. Comparing the two sides on the basis of their respective performance in the first match of the series and the two teams on paper, Southern Vipers are firm favorites to emerge on top for the second successive time in this tournament.
