We are just a couple of matches into the Pakistan Super League 2022 and things are looking exciting already. Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi showcased a high-scoring match with Zalmis eventually coming out on top. The Gladiators looked good but they will have a lot of work to do before they come out to play their next match.
Up next in the tournament, Quetta Gladiators are set to take on Karachi Kings, who too did not get off to the kind of start they were looking for. Both sides are coming off losses in their respective matches and will be desperate to register their first win. The match between Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators is to be played on 29th January 2022 at the National Stadium, Karachi.
Karachi Kings started as one of the favorites to win the title and they will be utterly disappointed with the way they played in the first match. They not only lacked intent with the bat but were also a little too cautious when it came to punishing the bad deliveries. They were so poor with the bat that at one time it looked like they were playing a fifty-over match.
On paper, a top-order with the likes of Sharjeel Khan, Babar Azam, and Joe Clarke would be expected to go all guns blazing in the powerplay. However, Babar Azam and Joe Clarke followed by Mohammad Nabi all scored at pedestrian pace as Karachi Kings found themselves in a spot of bother at the fag end of their innings. They were never able to launch the assault that they had been preparing for and eventually had to settle for a total of 124.
Credit to their bowlers that they made a modest total of 124 look like a lot more. Even though Multan Sultans got off to a reasonably good start, the Kings' bowlers didn't give away too many freebies to allow easy runs to the Sultans. Mohammad Nabi, in particular, redeemed himself with a decent spell, picking up two important wickets.
All in all, Karachi Kings have a terrific unit on paper with batsmen who are all pretty capable of scoring big. They would need to show a lot more intent in this upcoming match. Having said that, they are an experienced side and are not expected to press the panic button yet. We expect them to walk in with the same side and if they are able to play to their potential, they would be a very dangerous side to deal with.
Babar Azam, Sharjeel Khan, Joe Clarke, Mohammad Nabi, Tom Lammonby, Lewis Gregory, Imad Wasim, Aamer Yamin, Mohammad Taha, Mohammad Imran, Mohammad Ilyas.
Quetta Gladiators were mighty close to getting a win in their first match, but the loss of momentum with the bat arguably cost them the two important points. The loss pushed them to the third spot on the ladder, which, however, will change quickly given that we are still pretty early into the tournament.
Batting first against Peshawar Zalmi, Will Smeed looked in terrific touch as he smashed a remarkable fifty. However, the Zalmi lost momentum once he was dismissed and had to settle for a total of 190, which at one stage looked to be more like 210.
The Gladiators' bowlers did a decent job, but there were a few questionable calls from their skipper Sarfaraz Khan when the Zalmis were going well. He resorted to defensive ways in the captaincy and that proved to be a crucial factor as the presence of Shoaib Malik at the crease proved to be the difference between the two sides at the end.
All in all, Quetta Gladiators have a decent side on paper, but they would really need to step up their middle-overs bowling to tackle the potent batting lineup of Karachi Kings. If they are able to do that, getting past them could be very difficult.
Will Smeed, Ahsan Ali, Ben Duckett, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Iftikhar Ahmed, Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Nawaz, James Faulkner, Naseem Shah, Ashir Qureshi, Mohammad Hasnain.
Both these sides are sitting with losses in their previous matches respectively and will be desperate to get off the mark in the competition. Considering how the two sides played in their last respective matches and their sides on paper, Karachi Kings look a slightly better side. For that reason and the factors stated above, we would be placing our money on a Karachi win and so should you.
