Even though IPL is India's premier domestic competition, the other competitions still have their significance. We saw Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy grab a fair share of eyeballs recently and the same is happening with the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well. Vijay Hazare Trophy is already in the knockout stage with two quarter-finals to be played on 20th December 2021.
The first of those matches is to be played between Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in what is expected to be a cracking contest. Both sides are coming off fantastic respective runs in their preceding matches and will be raring to go. This upcoming match is to be played at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur.
Himachal Pradesh were never seeded as the top team in the tournament, but they have certainly managed to impress one and all with the way they have played in the tournament so far. They topped their group in the league stage and just managed to qualify for the quarter-finals on the back of a superior net run rate.
It's been a while since they last played a match in the competition. It was against Odisha and they managed to score a big win that not only added to their points tally but also provided a massive boost to their net rate. They finished their group campaign with three wins in five matches, totalling to 12 points. Coupled to that, they had a net run rate of 0.551.
Against Odisha, it was their terrific batting that set up that big win and consequently a place in the quarters. Batting first on an absolutely flat deck, all of their top-three batsmen contributed with brilliant fifties. Nikhil Gangta, in particular, was terrific as he provided impetus to a rather slow inning with a 57-ball 81. Rishi Dhawan, with this 58-ball 91 proved to be the difference between the two sides as took HP's score to 360, which at one moment looked to be more like 330.
On paper, Himachal Pradesh does not have much experience available, but they have done a terrific job in utilizing the resources they have. Rishi Dhawan has undoubtedly been their star and will need to fire once again in this important contest. If Himachal Pradesh are able to play the way they did in their last match, they will certainly be a tough side to get past.
Shubham Arora, Prashant Chopra, Nikhil Gangta, Rishi Dhawan, Sumeet Verma, Akash Vasisht, Mayank Dagar, Vinay Galetiya, Pankaj Jaswal, Sidharth Sharma, Amit Kumar.
Uttar Pradesh once used to be a powerhouse in Indian cricket, but with under-par performances across all formats in the recent domestic tournaments, they have now lost that tag. This match will be an opportunity for them to inch closer to reclaiming that tag, at least in the fifty-over format.
Uttar Pradesh didn't have the kind of group stage performance that they were after, but they still managed to finish second in their group. They needed to beat Madhya Pradesh in the preliminary quarter-final and they did that in style. They finished the group round with three wins from five matches, aggregating to 12 points, coupled with a net run rate of 0.708.
They started their run in the tournament on a rather disappointing note, losing to Saurashtra and Jharkhand in consecutive matches, but went on to register four consecutive wins after those losses. Not only did they win, it was also the manner in which they registered those wins was interesting. All of their three group games came with big margins before they defeated Madhya Pradesh in a rather close contest.
Uttar Pradesh may not have been as consistent as they would have liked to be with the bat, they have certainly been terrific with the ball. The likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shivam Mavi, and Ankit Rajpoot add to the sharpness of their attack. With the bat, they depend heavily on the likes of Rinku Singh and Akshdeep Nath. All in all, UP have a decent unit and if they are able to keep HP's talented batting under control, they should be able to sneak in through to the semis.
Aryan Juyal, Abhishek Goswami, Karan Sharma, Akshdeep Nath, Sameer Rizvi, RK Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shivam Sharma, Shivam Mavi, Ankit Rajpoot, Yash Dayal.
Generally in India, the surface tends to change over the course of 100 overs, but given that the winters are here in this part of India, the surface is likely to stay true throughout the course of the match. If anything, batting is only going to get easier as the match progresses. For that reason and the others stated above, the captain winning the toss will be looking to bowl first.

These are winter months in India and it will be nice and cool early in the morning. The day will brighten up as the match progresses and batting will get easier after a difficult first hour. This is one of the surfaces in India where quick bowlers are known to make a mark. Add to that cool and moist conditions early in the day, the new-ball bowlers should enjoy bowling here. Having said that, batsmen can get runs here rather quickly once set. Negotiating the first few overs and then going for the big ones will be the order of the day. The team batting first should be looking to put up a total of at least 270 runs on the board.

Himachal Pradesh have not really been a side known to be the top-league in India's domestic circuit and they now have an opportunity to make a name for themselves. Uttar Pradesh, on the other hand, will be looking to reclaim the 'powerhouse' tag they once had. Both sides have a lot to fight for in this upcoming contest and they both will be coming out all guns blazing. It would be a battle between UP's experienced bowling and HP's charismatic batting. Considering how the two sides have done in the tournament so far and their respective on-paper team combinations, Uttar Pradesh are slight favorites here, largely because of the experience they have. Back UP to win the first quarter-final of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021.
One of the primary reasons for Himachal Pradesh's superb performance in the season are the lower-order cameos from Rishi Dhawan. We have already seen how dangerous he can be with the bat and we may well see a similar sort of performance from him in this upcoming season, especially given the form he is in. Bet on Rishi Dhawan to score yet another fifty here in this match.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar hasn't been at his prime in international cricket, but he is still certainly a force to deal with. With conditions likely to assist new ball bowlers, dealing with Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be a challenge. Besides, he bowls in the powerplay and at the death, thereby having ample opportunities to pick up wickets. Bet on Bhuvneshwar Kumar to pick up at least a couple of wickets in this upcoming contest.
