Ireland suffered a big defeat to Oman in its second match and seemed to slip into familiar problems in the T20 format. As a test nation and a side that is looking forward to the T20 World Cup qualifiers, this defeat is a wakeup call to the work that is still needed.
It now faces Hong Kong, perhaps the weakest side in the competition, as it tries to get back on track.
Hong Kong has lost both its matches so far and appeared to be a class below the other teams competing in this tournament.
Hong Kong vs Ireland T20 Oman T20 Series is going to be played at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground Oman Cricket (Ministry Turf 1), Al Amarat, Oman on the 7th of October 2019.
Hong Kong batted better in its match against Nepal than it had in its opening match but still could not get enough runs to be able to win. Ahsan Abbasi, Nizakat Khan, Kinchit Shah, and Waqas Barkat all got starts without ever asserting themselves on the game.
One of the problems was the strike rate and the other was a lack of depth. The batsmen from Hong Kong find it tough to be able to score freely in slow conditions and are also worried about taking undue risks because of their shallow batting depth.
The same set of players must learn from its match against Nepal and try to score runs at a faster clip.
The bowling for Hong Kong is very ordinary as well. Kinchit Shah, Kyle Christie, Nasrullah Rana, and Ehsan Khan are honest triers but they are going to struggle against the Irish batting.
Scott McKechnie, Nizakat Khan, Ahsan Abassi, Raag Kapur, KD Shah, W Barkat, Ehsan Khan, Haroon Arshad, Kyle Christie, Nasrulla Rana, Mohammad Ghazanfar.
Ireland continues to struggle in the T20 format and was just defeated by Oman in its previous match. For a side that has so many players that play in the county championship or even around the world, these kinds of performances are unacceptable.
Ireland batted very well in its match against the Netherlands and started well against Oman as well but just lost its way in the second half.
Paul Stirling, Andrew Balbirnie, Kevin O’Brien and the other batsmen have to take more responsibility in the upcoming matches.
Some blame must also go to the Irish bowlers as they gave away over 170 runs to Oman. That is not a side that should be scoring more than 170 even if it is playing in home conditions. Craig Young lost his lengths in the death overs and Boyd Rankin was unable to break through in the middle overs as well.
There were a couple of occasions where Ireland could have pinned Oman down but they failed to do so. We don’t think that is going to be a problem against Hong Kong but is certainly going to be an issue against the stronger sides.
PR Stirling, Kevin O'Brien, Andy Balbirnie, Gareth Delany, Harry Tector, GC Wilson, Mark Richard Adair, Simi Singh, SR Thompson, WB Rankin, Lorcan Tucker.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first

Oman has provided some flat batting wickets with next to nothing in them for the bowlers. The slow nature of the pitch can make batting difficult as well and the new ball seems to be the best time to get quick runs.
The weather will continue to be hot and there is no chance of rain predicted.
Ireland may have had a hiccup against Oman but we expect it to bounce back strongly against Jong Kong.
Bet on Ireland to win.
