Selecting acupoints from remote area according to the time rules of meridian perfusion is the characteristic of Ziwuliuzhu in acupuncture. Determination of treatment according to different conditions is also its basic principle- For an effective combination of the two, at first, it is necessary to distinguish "syndrome" from 'disease" and the correlation between the two.. For "syndromes", Ziwuliuzhu acupuncture method should be used; while for "disease", common acupuncture method should be used. If a patient has both the "syndrome" and the "disease", the combined therapy of the two methods should be given. The theory and rules were reintroduced by Wu Zhuoxian, an initiator of Ziwuliuzhu theory of modern times, as early as 1957.

The author considers that the "syndrome" is a systemic pathological process which is resulted from or involved in vital energy and blood, such as dampness and heat of liver and gallbladder; while "disease" is a local pathological process which does not involve the vital energy and blood of the whole body, such as corn and strabismus. Local abnormity caused by the disorder of vital energy and blood should be regarded as the presence of both "syndrome" and "disease". Cough due to the cold wind or diarrhea due to the deficiency of Yang of spleen and kidneys are the example of it.

Ziwuliuzhu acupuncture method produces quite a good curative effect in the treatment of "syndrome" mainly because it can dredge and regulate the vital energy and blood according to the time rules of meridian movement. In accordance with these rules, the author of this article obtains better effect in his acupuncture treatment.
