Hysteria is a common symptom of neurosis, being often treated according to the symptoms or by suggestion therapy in the current medicine. We have found that acupuncture therapy for hysteria can get quick effect, perfect recovery, simple and easy manipulation.

Etiology And Pathogenesis of Hysteria

Hysteria separately pertains to the symptoms of depressive and manic mental disorders, hysteria, depressive disorder and "bulbus lillii" syndrome (depressive state of psychic disease), etc. described in traditional Chinese medicine. Its etiology and pathogenesis include the three types of the excessive consume of seven modes of emotions, stagnation of phlegm fire and fever caused by Yin-deficiency, We think both" blurring of heart and mind" and mental disturbance are the key of hysteria syndrome.

Differentiation of Syndromes For The Treatment of Hysteria By Acupuncture

We think "blurring of heart and mind" is the unified pathogenesis of hysteria syndrome which is a focus of attention on differentiating various hysteria symptoms. In addition, the differentiation of syndromes is according to the theories of Zang-Fu (internal organs), meridians are carried on depending upon the hysteria symptoms.

The Acupuncutre Manipulation For The Treatment of Hysteria Syndrome

We took "treating a disease by looking into both its root cause and symptoms" as the principle for selecting of points. At first, the therapeutic principle of "waking up a patient from unconsciousness and activating spirit" was taken, while treating various hysteria symptoms. Points Shuigou, Fengfu and Neiguan, were selected to treat "the fundamental aspect of the disease''. Then, the suitable points were selected according to various hysteria symptoms to treat "the incidental aspect of disease". If the patient was accompanied with mental symptom, points Shenmen, Tongli, Ximen were selected to remove the stasis; if it was accompanied with paralysis, Jiquan, Chize, Weizhong, Sanyinjiao etc. were selected to dredge meridians; if it was accompanied with aphasia, Lianquan, Jinjin, Yuye were selected to relieve stiffness of tongue and dredge the meridian passage; if it was accompanied with aphonia, Lianquan, Chize were selected to open the inhibited lung-energy and ease the pain of a sore throat; if it was accompanied with vomiting, Tiantu, Zhongwan were selected to readjust the stomach and subdue the ascending Qi; if it was accompanied with convulsion, Hegu, Taichong, liangshi, Yanglingquan, were selected to check the spasm and convulsion; if it was accompanied with blindness, Jingming, Qichong were selected to improve eyesight; if it was accompanied with deafness, Ermen, Yifeng were selected to clear the ear; if it was accompanied with globus hystericus, Tiantu, Lianquan were selected to regulate vital energy and ease the pain of a sore throat; if it was accompanied with the gastric symptoms, Zhongwan, Tianshu were selected to regulate the function of stomach and intestines; if it was accompanied with heart disease, Shenmen Xinshu etc. were selected to ease the mind by nourishing the heart.

Manipulation:

Puncturing Shuigou point with birdpecking method for the limitation of the greatest tolerance, located Fengfu point with the sitting position with bending of the head, inserting the needle from 2 to 2.5 cun with method of lifting and thrusting the needle until head or the end of extremities having the sensation of electric shock and punctured the other points with reducing method and strong stimulation to conduct the Qi (vital energy) or feeling of acupuncture to teh focus, stressing on the first result.
