Clinically methods of dredging meridians and promoting blood circulation as to eliminate blood stasis by drugs have been generally used to cure pains, and acupuncture may induce also good analgesic effects. Therefore the study of acupuncture effect of promoting blood circulation to eliminate blood stasis possesses important clinical significance.

20 in-patients with stomach ache were selected. Pulse condition, picture of the tongue. blood pressure, cardiac output and peripheral resistance were observed during acupuncture, and the relationships between movement of peripheral blood vessel and therapy of promoting blood circulation to eliminate blood stasis were studied before and after acupuncture. The results were as follows:

1. Pulse condition:

Pulse conditions of patients showed obvious changes after acupuncture. Frequent-and-wiry pulse, tight-and-wiry pulse and irregular pulses generally transformed into tardy-and-wiry pulse and wiry pulse,

2. Picture of tongue:

There were 15 patients with dark and dim colors of tongue, one patient with red color, and 4 patients with light color before acupuncture. After acupuncture variations of pictures of tongue of last 4 patients were not obvious, but colors of tongue of the other 16 patients 's changed to light red.

3. Cardiac output:

Cardiac output in 60% of the patients increased, in 5% of patients remained unchanged, and in 35% of patients decreased. The differences between before and after acupuncture were statistically significant (P<0.05).

4. Peripheral resistance:

Peripheral resistances decreased in 75 patients, increased in 20%, and remained unchanged in 5% after acupuncture. The differences between before and after acupuncture were statistical significant (P<0.05)

5. Blood pressure:

Systolic pressures decreased in 70% patients, remained unchanged in 25%, and increased in 5% after acupuncture, diastolic pressures decreased in 80% patients, remained unchanged in 15%, and increased in 5%. The differences between before and after acupuncture were statistically significant (P<0.01).

Above results show that:

1. There is a tight relationship between effects of promoting blood circulation to eliminate blood stasis by acupuncture and movement of peripheral blood vessel.

2. Effect of promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis yielded by acupuncture may produce analgesic effects.

3. Effect of promoting blood circulation to eliminate blood stasis by acupuncture  promote improvements of picture of tongue and pulse conditions.
