Functional bleeding of the uterus, a common disease in gynecology, falls under the term "Benglou" in traditional Chinese medicine. Efforts have been made for many years to treat this ailment with auriculo-acupuncture in the light of guidelines of the classic theories, and results obtained so far are desirable. Auriculo-acupuncture as a conventional therapy for a variety of diseases can be dated back to ancient time, the close correlation between auriculo-points and systemic meridians as well as the internal organs was identified in a classic article "The Canon of the Spiritual Pivot" which dealt with pathogens invading the viscera and their manifestations. It clearly pointed out that "vitality and blood go upward to the face and sense organs, the 12 major meridians and the 365 collaterals," and that "All the meridians and collaterals meet at the auricula."

Auriculo-points of the uterus locate at the fossa triangularis where various gynecological diseases are indicated. Point Ge (Diaphragma) is on the crus helix, and according to the traditional theory, it is where the blood meets, where the blood can be directed to the proper meridians, therefore it is indicated to diseases caused by bleeding due to evil heat in blood. Our practice is to inject small amount of Vitamin K3 into this point anticipating the effects of promoting the circulation and removal of blood stasis, letting the blood go back to its original meridian.

The injection of Vitamin K3 actually includes point Uterus in addition to point Ge. The procedure can be described as follows: Let the patient lie on her side, with both ears routinely sterilized, and then inject 0.1 ml daily of Vitamin K3 into Pt. Uterus and Pt. Ge on both ears respectively (1 ml syringe, needle No 5). This procedure should be repeated for every 3 or 4 days. 48 out of 70 cases showed full recovery; 12 showed marked improvement; 8 were some alleviation; and 2 were unsuccessful. The total success rate is 97%. The majority of them showed a general decrease of bleeding after the initial treatment, a marked decrease after the second treatment, and the bleeding was eventually checked after the third or fourth treatment.

Follow-up observations were found no recurrence in most cases, and normal menstruation cycle had been established with normal color, amount and no subsequent symptoms. This therapy could still be effective even if a greater amount of menstrual flow occur in the next menstrual cycle.
