DISCUSSION ABOUT THE SYNDROMES OF MERIDIANS AND COLLATERALSWang fuyi (Beijing Hospital of TCM, Bcijing} Till now there are many kinds of explanation about the "SM-Dong" (primary disease of meridian and visceral disease involved by the disease of its relevant meridian and "Suo-Sheng" (primary disease of viscus and meridian disease involved by the disease of its relevant viscus) described in the chapter of meridians and collaterals of "Ling-Shu" (Miraculous Pivot). The syndromes of meridians and collaterals are discussed in this article. "Shi-Dong" means the manifestation of the syndromes when there is disorder of certain meridian which can be found by the method of palpation of meridians and points. Clinical practice demonstrates that in some diseases, tenderness or a nodule or other abnormal reactions may occur along the courses of the involved meridians or at certain points. "Suo-Sheng", in the past, usually was explained according to the causes of the syndromes. This article intends to use the word "Shi-Zhu" (indications) instead of the "Suo-Sheng''. "Shi-Zhu" presents the indications of a certain meridian. The syndromes of meridians and collaterals described in "Ling-Shu" usually give direct guidance to clinical therapy in acupuncture and moxibustion. It is possible to determine which meridian is affected by examining the meridian. In treating diseases with acupuncture, it is necessary to differentiate the pathological condition by the method of differentiation of syndromes. The method of treating diseases with acupuncture only according to the point of reaction should be discussed. The theory of syndromes of meridians has been used as a guide to clinical therapy to treat a case of eczema and a case of retinopathy. Satisfactory results were obtained. |
