CERVICAL SYNDROME WITH ACUPUNCTURE AND MOXIBUSTIONSong Zhengliiin, Wang Shuqin, Wang Tengyun. (Institute of Acupuncture, Academy of TCM, Beijing) In traditional Chinese medicine the cervical syndrome is related to "Bi syndrome" or stagnation of qi and blood. Clinically we have treated 125 cases with acupuncture and coordinated with functional exercises and obtained good result. Treating method: 1. Acupuncture and moxibustion: Selection of points: The points were selected according to the course of the meridian. Manipulation - Even movement, retaining needles for 15 minutes or fast pricking. If traumatic injury with severe bruises and pain, reducing method may be used. Treatment should be given 3 times a week. Ten sittings may be considered as one course of treatment. Points for pain in neck and back: Tianzhu, Dingchuan, Jiaji points in neck, Quyuan, Jianyu, Tianzong, Waiguan, Zhongzhu and Hegu. Points for pain in lumbar and legs: Shenshu, Qihaishu, Dachangshu, Huantiao, Yang-lingquan, Zusanii, Weizhong, Kunlun. Moxibustion should be added to those with deficiency and cold type of constitution. Cupping may be done to those with shoulder and back pain. 2. Functional exercise: After the pain having relieved by acupuncture and moxibustion, it was advisable to do functional exercise with bending of the neck forward, backward and sideways (left and right) twice a day. The exercise should be mild at first, then more energetic. Care should be taken not to be over fatigue. Therapeutic result: Among 125 cases, present cures 42 cases (33.6%), marked improved 44 cases (35.2%), improved 54 cases (27.2%), no result 5 cases (4%). It makes up the rate of marked improvement 68.8%, and total improvement 96%. Result analysis from the types of syndromes: Vertebral arteries and nerve roots types obtain better result. Duration and therapeutic result: There are no marked differences in how many times of treatment and the therapeutic effect. Result. Pain, numbness, reflex pain and numbness, dizziness, lassitude etc. have good result in acupuncture. Among the 125 cases, 118 cases had X-ray taken, except those that the physiological curve became straight, semi-spondylolisthetic and became angular with some improvement, the others such as spurs, calcified of ligaments have not much changed. Angiomotor examination: After treatment, those types related to the vertebral arteries had obtained marked improvement in the amount of blood flow, Follow-up visit: 26 persons who were in Beijing, received treatment from 2 to 7 years ago basically had stable therapeutic result. But 2 cases slipped back (which makes up 7.6%.). |
