In Conversation with
Kinetic Fallacy:
June 2008
A little background:
Outside of doing Setting Sun and making experimental
Music, over the past six months, I have also started
Making a splash in the poetry field within Manchester.
At the first one of these events that I did was at
Somewhere called Not Part off New Years Eve, when
In-between doing a poetry reading myself, I also caught
A new of really good acts including the act in this
Interview who were a young act called ‘Kinetic Fallacy’
From Liverpool which blew me out totally with their
Mixture of classical instrumentation mixed with Jazz,
Alternative hip hop and electronic beats.
The band themselves list their influences as ‘The Knife,
DJ Shadow, Bjork, Massive Attack, Cinematic Orchestra,
Uncle, Lamb, 4Hero, Fourtet, London Electricity, The Bays,
Hexstatic, light surgeons, xploding plastic, Proem,
Boards of Canada, Beck, Buck 65......to name a few
The band also according to their website also say they collaborate
alongside filmmakers; VJ’s and animators to create pieces that are
performed live in sync with each other. Using cuts from both 1950’s
and new produced animation films they are more than a band with
wallpaper and Knietic Fallacy currently for UK has tracks licencsed
to the Granada ITV channel, which at present are being used
for adverts.
For more information on the band – please go to their website
Which is the following:
Cheers to the band for this interview.
I certainly will be going down to the festival mentioned
In September in Liverpool. After seeing this lot
I would recommend you go also.
Cheers
Andy N
Setting Sun:
What’s happening at
the moment and how are
things?
Kinetic Fallacy:
We are organising Liverpool's first AV fest
at the moment AudioVision 2008
www.av08.co.uk , so in writing and playing
terms its all a bit slow until September - which is
were, playing together again will kick
off.
Setting Sun:
Next, can you tell us
a little bit about the
history of Kinetic
Fallacy
who fired the
starting pistol etc?
Kinetic Fallacy:
It all started in 2004 from a show entitled
Kinetic Fallacy which was a 10 piece live band
performing new music set to the backdrop of
3 silent 1920/30's dada films.
The music and instrumentation was a
mix of jazz, drum and bass and classical
composed by Hannah Peel and violinist
Sarah Anderson.
We managed to get funding for the show
and took it on tour around the UK, ending up
at the Big Chill Festival 2005. It was there that
we discovered laptops and 2 piece set-ups!
So from then on Hannah on violin, keys,
trombone and the percussionist
Emma Welsby decided to carry on the
Kinetic Fallacy as a smaller band creating
more electronic pieces and playing their
instruments with the laptops all alongside
a VJ.
Setting Sun:
What are your
influences and what are you
listening to at the
moment?
Kinetic Fallacy:
There are so many!! We love artists like
Cinematic Orchestra, Xploding plastix,
hexstatic, DJ Yoda, Addictive TV
and also composers such as
Steve Reich, Brian Eno and Gavin Bryers
- so there is a whole mix of cross-genres.
At the moment though, after a trip to NYC
the one thing that is playing on the playlist
is a lot of new american folk music artists like
Alela Dione and Vetiver.
Not like the kind of music we write at all.
Setting Sun:
I know from seeing
you live – you do play gigs
on a regularish
basis.. How do these compare
to your studio
recordings? Is their one
you prefer over the
other?
Kinetic Fallacy:
We definitely prefer the live performances.
Haven't yet managed to capture the
tunes well enough in the studio.
Setting Sun:
I have being really
enjoying your songs
On myspace.com in
particular
‘Poe's Eyes’ ‘ can
you tell us a little
bit about this song
etc?
Kinetic Fallacy:
Based on a poem by Edgar Allen Poe Dream
within a Dream. The poem is about leaving someone
you love and at the time it felt just right to set to
music.
The track begins with the sample of a mini grand
piano that we warped and wrote the song over,
building and building with drums and percussion
until the end.
Setting Sun:
It is excellent to
see also you have being
working with other
artists / projects such
as Denise Armstrong
for example – how
do these compare to
your normal music
projects?
Kinetic Fallacy:
We are all working musicians in Kinetic Fallacy
so when doing these projects like with Denise, we
worked with over 100 children across Liverpool
to create music to her dance students. They were a
mix of all ages and abilities. Our most favorite
was working alongside St.Vincents School for the
Blind. The musicians there were just
unbelievably talented. Working on projects
like this is really rewarding for us.
Setting Sun:
What is the
inspiration behind your name
‘Kinetic Fallacy by
the way also?
Kinetic Fallacy:
The first show was all about the magic of
movement and camera trickery / editing
in those old dada films.
Setting Sun:
What’s next for you
all? Do you have
any more gigs lined
up, maybe
recordings?
Kinetic Fallacy:
The festival! AudioVision 2008 is our next gig –
September 20th in front of the
Mersey Tunnel Air Vent at the Docks.
We are performing alongside Addictive TV,
Ultre and warp records film makers, Flat-e.
The huge projections for each artist
will be behind the stage onto the building.
Up until then, its all about getting the
festival ready - there is going to be an outdoor bike
in cinema, workshops and film screenings
and also an installation on the Air Vent building
for 5 nights. A collaboration between 2
NYC artists and a local visual artist.

Setting Sun:
A few more lighter
questions to
finish off with…
Firstly, I usually ask
next where are you
all from and stuff
and what is the music
scene like up
where you are, but I
already know
Liverpool a little
bit and know what a hotbed
of good music (almost
as good as Manchester –
lol) so instead I’ll
just ask you have
seen any good acts
yourself etc?
Kinetic Fallacy:
DJ Yoda performed last week as part of Sound City in
Liverpool - that was ace :-) Also can't wait to
Pentangle perform at the Philharmonic in July.
Setting Sun:
Secondly, what would
be your dream job if
You were not in
Kinetic Fallacy?
Kinetic Fallacy:
Playing music with radiohead :-)
Setting Sun:
What would you like
to be doing
when you are 60?
Kinetic Fallacy:
Hopefully having a well-earned rest!
Setting Sun:
Lastly, what will you
be
doing when you are
60?
Kinetic Fallacy:
Playing lots of music whilst our silvery
hair pieces fall off :-)
