WADs From Other Authors |

Forest Valley by J. S. Gagnon The forest.wad file has been
one of the very first PWAD files I have ever played and I enjoyed it so
much that I actually started Doom editing on my own. This file contains
map replacements for DOOM Episode 2: E2M1, E2M2, E2M3, E2M4 and
E2M9, however it's main characteristic is that it features custom textures
such as the "forest sky" texture to which the file owns its
name. While featuring new gfx may not look as a particular detail
since most of the more recent PWADs have new graphics, it's important to
notice that back in the first days of DOOM editing the powerful and easy
tools we have now to deal with textures were not fully available, so I dare say
Forest Valley could right be a "pioneristic" work in the
field of adding custom textures in a PWAD. |

Doom Purgatory by J. Wilson Another WAD file for DOOM
Episode 2 that replaces the first two maps in the episode. While the
first one is just an intro which scratches you down to about 8% health using the
E1M8 exit-before-you-die finish, the second map is the real level and,
when I first played it, it was definitely the larger map I had seen.
Purgatory itself has been designed as a large fortress where the
SoulSphere with the soul you've lost is guarded by the usual monsters.
This is still one of my favourite WADs because it has lots of
atmosphere IMHO. |

Return to Purgatory by J. Wilson From the same author of the
above file comes this follow-up PWAD that uses the new creatures,
power-ups and double-barrelled shotgun featured in DOOM2 to provide a
tougher experience compared to the previous work. The file contains 7
new levels (MAP11 through MAP15 plus MAP31 and MAP32) themed with Doom
Purgatory and also features some new music (most of it coming from
Heretic). Apparently this file was released on Compuserve only, but I
was lucky enough to get in touch with Shade (James Wilson, the author)
who mailed me his work; since it isn't available on the DOOM archives
I'm hosting the file for download on my page. |

Wasteland was supposed to be
a replacement for DOOM Episode 2, but unfortunately it wasn't completed
(at least to my knowledge) and it consists of only four maps. The first
2 maps are available in the DOOM archives, while I received the third
and the fourth level from the author through email. I'm hosting the third
map on my homepage, while I decided not to place here the fourth one
called "Mausoleum" since it's almost incomplete. All the three
maps available feature a good atmosphere and realistic lighting settings.

Deadbase by A. Barsella As Maj. Barowsky, a member
of the Space Marines sent on patrol duty around space, descend to and
explore the surface of the planet to find out why communications were
lost with the Prometeus base. The map is "city-like"
with many buildings to visit and features including a particularly
detailed lighting and a couple of faked two-floor buildings created using the
Teleport effect. |

Moutain Of Fire by A. Barsella Following right where the
story of Deadbase ends this second map in the Wasteland series takes the
player through a volcanic mountain into the heart of the base where Maj.
Barowsky will find some clues regarding what happened. Featuring a red
rock theme this map is rather dark, so beware the Partially Invisible Spectres
on ambush mode which become fully invisible thanks to darkness and slightly flickering
lights. |

Sands Of Death by A. Barsella After completing Moutain Of
Fire Maj. Barowsky finds a secret location conceived beyond the volcano
where sand is so hot making his journey particularly painful. This map
like Deadbase is "city-like" and features just like the other two
maps some custom textures and some special effects as well.
Sands Of Death is the last complete map in the Wasteland series,
Mausoleum being left incomplete. The zip file is hosted on my page being
unavailable from the DOOM archives. |
