To start have you
noticed the high cost of medicinal oils and salves in the local health
store. Well there is a reason the costs are so high It's a very time
consuming process. This page is just a basic guideline to making your own
oils and salves more information should be sought after for the precise
ointment, oil etc, you are trying to make.
Carrier Oils (Base Oils)
Base oils are oils that carry essential oils to their destination
and to dilute the essential oils because they are usually too strong to
apply to the body alone. Possible carrier oils
include:
Apricot Kernel oil: This pale yellow oil provides a light texture and is rich in
vitamins and minerals.
Avocado
oil: This is a very
rich, dark green oil. It is highly nutritious with essential fatty acids,
minerals, protein, vitamin E, and beta carotene and penetrates the skin
easily.
Castor oil: A thick, sticky oil with a
strong odor. It has good lubricating properties.
Coconut oil: This light colored oil turns solid at cool room
temperatures. The fractionated version is extremely light and does not go
rancid with age, making it a very versatile carrier
oil.
Grapeseed oil: This oil has a very fine
texture and a slight greenish hue. It provides vitamins and minerals. It
is also used as an antioxidant and can prolong the life of other
oils.
Jojoba oil: Its chemical makeup is
closer to that of a liquid wax than that of a vegetable oil. It is an
antioxidant and does not turn rancid. Jojoba oil is a natural mimic of the
oil secreted by the human skin. It lubricates and protects. It is almost
identical to valuable oil found in the Sperm whale.
Olive oil: Extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil is the best quality
available. It is rich in minerals, vitamins, and
proteins.
Sunflower Seed
oil: This is a
light textured, golden yellow oil. It is high in nutrients, essential
fatty acids, and vitamins.
Sweet
Almond oil: This
pale yellow oil contains glyceride, olein, and linoleic acid. It is an
excellent skin lubricant and is rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals.
This is a very good medium-light general purpose
oil.
Wheat Germ oil: This reddish-orange oil is
heavy and sticky. It is rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals, and
especially vitamin E. It is often added to other blends since its
antioxidant properties can extend the shelf life of more volatile oils.
Some others are: peach kernel oil, hazelnut oil,
camelia oil and macadamia oil.
Approximate Measurements

Method One To start with fresh organic herbs should be used so that
chemicals sprayed on plants can't be accidentally introduced into your
mixture. In most cases these means either gathering the herbs from the
woods, or growing your own herb garden.
Next decide what type
of oil base you want to use. There is no point taking all the time growing
your own organic herbs just to steep them in a commercial vegetable oil
filled with pesticides. A good organic olive oil might be costly but is
well worth the extra expense. Perhaps you would even want to make your own
oil base.
The first step is the gathering and preparing of your
herbs. Herbs should be diced finally to allow maximum exposure to the oil.
After dicing you have the choice of tying them in cheese cloth, or just
placing them straight into the oil. Placing them straight into the oil
allows for better saturation and a stronger finished product. Depending on
if dried or fresh herbs are used will determine the amount of oil used.
For fresh herbs 2/3 oil to 1/3 herb is a common mixture. Dried herbs will
require a larger amount of oil generally a 80% oil mixture will work
fine.
The next step is to extract the medicinal values from the
herbs this is done with the aid of heat. Heating the mixture to around
100--115 degrees F. for a couple of weeks will do this nicely. Again check
to see what is required for the herb's you are working with.
After
your herbs have simmered in oil for the desired amount of time the next
step is to extract the oil from the herbs. This can be done by straining
the liquid into a mason jar, and letting set. After the jar has set for a
day or two pour off the oil leaving behind any remaining pieces of plant
matter and water. Now you are ready to use as required or store (for up to
one year) in a dark colored jar.
Method
Two
You will
need: Mineral Oil (or your choice of oil) Fresh or dried herbs
and/or flowers Small Jars with a tight fitting lids.
Place the
mineral oil (or whatever oil you have decided to use) and herbs in jars,
place cap on tightly. Store it in a dark cool area. Once a week for 2
weeks, shake the mixture in the jar. In the third week, use cheesecloth to
strain the mixture. Add more herbs and oil if necessary and allow to sit
for another 2 weeks. When you have gotten the scent that you wanted strain
the herbs out again, and store the oil in a dark cool place.
Method Three
Pour your oil into
your mortar. Add your herb a little at a time, pressing it into the oil
with your pestle. After you have combined it well, pour it into a bottle.
Store the bottle in a dark, consecrated place for three days. On the
fourth day check oil to see if it has absorbed enough of the scent. When
the scent is right for you it is ready for use in your spell work. You can
repeat this process of scenting your oil until its as strong as you
desire.
