The Syntor X is a completely different
radio from the Syntor, sharing similiar basic synthesizer
technology and accessories but none of the circuitry or
hardware.

- Radios are are available in -
- VHF low band - highly prized as they
cover 10M AND 6M in the same breath.
(Diamond has a 10M/6M/2M mobile antenna.)
Current price is about $200. This doesn't
mean you won't see someone advertising
one for $375 but (hold my tongue)
- VHF high band - everyone could put one of
these to good use even as a base station.
Current prices $50-$120.
- 450-470 UHF - ditto above radio.
Exception - you will find 403-430 MHz
range I radios around but they don't
shift to the ham bands without surgery on
the VCO (see Syntor info) and retuning
(major headache)
- 800 MHz - Syntor X are conventional,
Syntor X2 are conventional and trunking,
Syntor X3 are trunking. Memory Modules
and personality boards are different from
other Syntor X's. They can be had cheap!
I recently bought a pile of 7 for $5 and
sold off the X2 and X3's for $2. It is
nice to double your money.
- General info about the Syntor X (800's excepted):
- They have very wide bandwidth front ends
but are not easily tuned. The VCO's may
be modified to change range and radios
retuned but it is best to stick to radios
which are close to the frequencies
desired.
- Programming is most easily done by
removing the prom from the Memory Module.
The eeprom in orange label module is a
28C16 but 2716 eproms may be used in
those and white label modules (early
bipolar type). Inexpensive eprom
programmers abound. Check Nuts and Volts
magazine ads for new ones under $49. They
show up at hamfests for $20, and free
from friends (got one free last night).
ASK AROUND before paying for one! See me
about software.
- The Memory Module holds:
- frequency receive and transmit
- reference and VCO sub-range data
- turn-off-timer (TOT) 15 second
increments to 7:45
- scan list radio may scan all 32
channels
- Two priority channels
- pl encode/decode ctcss and
digital codes
- The Syntor X cable has a different radio
connector than Syntor and Micors. The
sys90
control heads
are similiar but slightly different. The
12 frequency lines are bidirectional so
sys90 head isolation of these lines is
required.
- Speakers are 8 ohm, the same as
Syntor/Micor.
- Microphones are the same as
Syntor/Micor/MCX-100.
