About the Album
The 'Gift Of Game' by Crazy Town is their major label debut. This album blurs the line between rap and rock for a new metal sound that is a combination of rhythmic raps and raw riffs that make this an explosive addition to any rock collection.
About the Artist
On one side of the tracks, there's South Central and Watts. On the other, there is posh Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, and all that glitters. It may be the City of Angels for some, but for a seven-man rap-rock band, it's one crazy town.

Crazy Town, the band, is a cross between Orgy, Limp Bizkit, the Beastie Boys, and Eminem. The band's sound is more hip-hop than rock, with great beats and rhymes that rival the best of the genre, plus hard-hitting metal musculature. The Gift of Game, the band's 1999 album debut on Sony, aptly demonstrates the diverse influences and personalities that created and cultivated Crazy Town.

This all began in the early 1990s with two Los Angeles youngsters, Shifty Shellshock and Epic Mazur. The two grew up listening to the music of N.W.A., Ice-T, Cypress Hill, and The Cure. Thus, the rap vs. rock dichotomy was formulated early on. It was Shifty's turn-on to the Beastie Boys that made it mesh for him. Epic, meanwhile, was going to high school with soon-to-be stars like Everlast, Ice Cube and Danny Boy of the future House of Pain. Epic got into the business by providing the music for a solo record by MC Serch from the group, 3rd Bass.

Shifty and Epic got together and formed Brimstone Sluggers. While they never produced an album under that name, they did work with other hip-hop artists, including Divine Styler and the Black-Eyed Peas. They began developing their own version of a hip-hop band with full musical back-up. With Faydoedeelay on bass, Rust Epique and Trouble Valli on guitar, DJ AM working the turntables, and JBJ on drums, Crazy Town came into being. About the band's hip-hop/rock sound, Shifty said (at www.crazytown.com), "We're part of the new generation of kids who really have an appreciation for all kinds of music, and they're all being pushed together."

The Gift of Game was produced by Josh Abraham, who previously worked with Coal Chamber and Orgy. One track, "Dark Side," features Jay Gordon of Orgy. "Toxic," which was released as a single and was included on the album, is an aural assault while "Butterfly" offers an approach that is more mellow. All in all, The Gift of Game shows the same diversity as the band's influences, and the city where it was born.
