Somalia:
In 1992, supported by a contingent of United States troops, the United Nations (UN) intervened in hopes of restoring order and saving hundreds of thousands of Somalis from starvation. The United States soon identified Aidid as the most important source of instability in Somalia, but repeated attempts to capture or eliminate him failed. At the time of the UN withdrawal in 1994, Aidid remained a major warlord, seemingly little weakened by the measures taken against him. Aidid died from gunshot wounds received during a Mogadishu Street battle in July 1996. That same day Gen. William Garrison, who led the Mogadishu mission, retired. Sources say the general winks at the coincidence.
An interesting fact, Aidid's son is now in power. But interestingly he was also a US Marine. Once he gains full control of the country relations with the West will improve. When he was asked about his Marine days he responded: "Once a Marine, always a Marine!"
