The Constitution was suspended, while the "National
Gathering" and the Senat were disolved. Later on, Pakistan
was excluded from the Commonwealth
General Pervez Musharraf, the chief of staff of the Pakistan
Armed Forces has decreted the emergency status and took over the
executive power in Pakistan during the early night hrs of friday,
the 15th of october 1999, two days after the prime-minister Nawaz
Sharif was removed from his attributes.
According to an official statement published integrally by the
Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), general Musharraf took over
the executive power in Pakistan, while "the whole country
passed under the control of the armed forces".
The National Gathering, the Senat and the local Gatherigs were
also disolved, while the Constitution was suspended. According to
the document quoted above, the former secretaries of Nawaz
Sharif's former government will cease to do their jobs, while the
president Rafiq Tarar will be under the new chief of Executive's
orders.
The State Hit organized by Musharraf took place a few hrs after
the former pakistaneze premier announced the removel of general
Musharraf from his function in the military. Sources from the
military declared thursday the 14th of october 1999 that they
took over the power in order to prevent a conspiracy that would
"remove phisically" the general.
In his announcement, general Musharraf, who is the chief of Land
Armed Forces and also the chief of Inter-arms Operational Staff,
said that he had authorized the installation of emergency status
in the entire country after consulting with the Cmdrs of the
Navy, the Air Force and also with the generals who command each
army corps.
Martial Law
One of the responsibles inside a human rights organization said
that this is "the installation of martial law in the
country, but without saying the name for it". Martial Law
has been decreted before in Pakistan between 1977 and 1985 by
general Mohammad Zia ul-Haq.
The Pakistaneze military leaders took the decision of claiming
the emergency status after two days of consultings in the city of
Rawalpindi where the General Staff of the Armed Forces is located
as well as in Islamabad, Pakistan's capitol city.
This event is very important due to the fact that Pakistan and
its neighbour India are two countries debating since many years
about a commonly disputed provence located somewhere between, in
and around their borders, Kashmir.
India and Pakistan are both developing nuclear capabilities
despite the international threats to affect them both with
economical sanctions.
India also has a very powerful military, armed with MiG21 Fishbeds which will soon be
upgraded to the new standard imposed by MAPO Mikhoyan, MiG21-2000,
standard which was rejected to be imposed on Romanian MiG21s,
currently MiG21 Lancers. Also, India
has a segnificant nomber of MiG29 Fulcrum
s and a large array of Soviet or Russian -built weapons. India will
also purchase at least 50 Su30MKI Flanker
s, and is also interested in other modern Russian weaponry projects
like the SMT upgrading for their MiG29s, the Russian
anti-aircraft and SAM installations like S-300, S-400, SA-19
Grisom, etc and also Russian tanks from the latest generation,
especially T-80U but also T90s.
