Romanian Presidential Elections

Back to Index | Back to News Archive

After a shocking 30% (29% to be more exact) of the votes, Corneliu Vadim Tudor was safely defeated by Ion Iliescu, who after some Constitutional unclarities following the december 1989 Revolution, could be serving his third presidential mandate already!
If we do not count the 1990-1992 provisorial presidency, it is only a legal second. However, faced with his "competition", one could say this was the only choice.
After ten years of severe recession, which followed to ten other years of 'mild' recession and degradation of the standard of living, Romania expects much of its newly formed Government, ruled by Prime-Minister Adrian Nastase, who already presented a plan for four years. A plan which includes economic growth of 4.1% per year every year, which skeptics say could never be achieved, because during 1996-2000, while the world enjoyed a high time of prosperity and economic expansion, Romania lost 13% of its budget. If that happened then, how could we realize an increase, while everybody else is stagnating.
However, again, the first signs of economic recovery are showing and this seemingly impossible task could, somehow, actually be achieved. I surely hope so.
God Bless Romania
