St. Ides

"get your girl in the mood quicker / Get your Jimmy thicker"

Brewer: McKenzie River Brewing Company

Where?: San Francisco, Lehigh Valley, PA

Alcoholic Content: 7.3% (from the bottle)

Taste: Eh...

An excerpt from alt.culture: 40oz. Malt Liquor:

St. Ides' maker, the San Francisco-based McKenzie River Brewing Co., has been the subject of criticism and federal complaints for using rap stars such as the Geto Boys and Ice Cube to target-market this powerful intoxicant to black youth. One Ice Cube ad boasted that the malt liquor would "get your girl in the mood quicker / Get your Jimmy thicker."

You wouldn't think it just by looking at the bottle, but St. Ides has got to be the sleaziest of all the malt liquors currently made. Their ads are bad enough, but they are also one of the few brewers who makes kool-aide flavored malt liquor (called St. Ides Special Brew), and have even tried selling fruit flavored malt liquor popsicles (see Alex Wiess's comments below. Then their is the whole Tyson/Holyfield thing: as someone who once e-mailed me said, do you think Tyson would have bit Holyfield's ear off if Budweiser had sponsered the fight?

Comments from the outside world

Ryan Harris "I found a special St. Ides can. It is a 24 ounce commemerative can about the Tyson-Holyfield fight coming up in May. It says "The sound and the fury, Holyfield Tyson II, May 3 1997, MGM Grand Las Vegas" it also has a large "crooked I" on it.
Jim Caron "St. Ides is also getting into the spirit of things. They, too have a super tall boy, a 25 Oz limited Edition commerative can celebrating Tyson-Holyfield, II this May. Of course I bought out the stock, how could I not??? I cracked on open Sat Night and drank about half of it till the shit got warm. Man, whatever you do chill it down nice and cold and DON'T let it get warm....It smelled like old socks when it got warm and I had to toss it. I can also report that my woman did NOT get into the mood quicker (or at all) and my jimmy didn't get thicker as a result...."
Alex Weiss I don't know if you heard about this or not but St. Ides 'test marketed' a new product in New York and some other state. It was dubbed 'St. Ides Freeze 'n' Squeeze' and the thing was like a frozen popsicle version of their 'special brew' fruit flavored malt liquors. Anyways, there was a huge uproar so this very non-PC product never got past the test phase. Apparently, owners of liquor stores were selling the things to kiddiez not realizing that they were selling an alcoholic product to minors.

Thanks to Jim Caron for scanning his can.
