            John Christopher Depp II was born in Owensboro, Kentucky on June 9, 1963 to John Christopher Depp and Betty Sue Palmer. He was raised in Florida with his three siblings Debbie, Christie, and Danny. He got his first guitar at the age of 13 and taught himself how to play it. At 17 he dropped out of school to become a rock musician. His band, The Kids, were fairly successful, opening for the likes of Iggy Pop. He married in 1983 at the age of twenty and was divorced in 1985. Johnny’s wife introduced him to Nicolas Cage who introduced Johnny to acting. Johnny’s first starring role was in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) as Glen Lantz. In 1987 Johnny landed the role of Officer Tom Hanson on the TV series 21 Jump Street and he became a Teen Heartthrob. In an effort to be recognized as a serious actor he rejected his Teen Idol status to be in movies that he wanted to do. His first role after quitting 21 Jump Street was Cry-Baby (1990), an offbeat musical comedy in which he played the title character of Wade ‘Cry-Baby’ Walker. His next movie was Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands in which Johnny played the title character. The role of Edward Scissorhands turned out to be one of Johnny’s most memorable and lovable characters. Since Johnny rejected his Teen Idol status he’s been in many quirky and wonderful movies, but sadly he hasn’t gotten nearly the recognition he deserves for the amount of talent and effort he puts into his roles. Johnny has had somewhat of a reputation for being a troubled actor. He has been arrested twice, once for trashing a New York apartment (1994) and again for being in a fight with paparazzis in front of a London restaurant (1999). Johnny met and fell in love with French actress/singer Vanessa Paradis. The two live in France together with their two children Lily-Rose Melody Depp (05/27/99) and John Christopher Depp III (04/10/02) who they call Jack for short. In 2004 Johnny received an Oscar nomination for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). The Oscar went to Sean Penn for Mystic River, but at least the critics and the Academy are slowly coming to their senses. Johnny is currently planning his fourth film with director Tim Burton, a remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in which Johnny will play Willy Wonka. Filming should start this summer (2004) and the movie should be released in theaters next year (2005).
